(See, for example, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/04\/16\/opinion\/spring-nature-christianity.html?unlocked_article_code=jxeFZFhPN-XtWdwy9-HqsmG1JsGtOs9u_wE61_XvYrAOZaJ6aJOELOy8StDFML4FAyKxZ9V7ElWoxNvxEYnmLP3Ze8QxwbnDYmmMOpo5Mb32hXZ_1PY25K5CriKbZ90k_nLEmFWr_hVE2EniWAVhfNv7gEKTQ-qnh4b1Lw2C4ktXewsFX1UxGSJIp5RQf5gNhP2g_g9r57n6Cd5yE2PuugP8HOEjP6cSSTfiqnCMOtgUTVEhB0JWiJvUEb-iBh6nSAroU8evdDaFhQA4Yh2c1Z1rDWDgQGZbQh-tV8NRYTO5e5Zgh8m6WWiuKZzwaUEMCd0tDt2O-mPNvRbbiHQtRHVbIxEc&amp;giftCopy=2_Explore&amp;smid=url-share\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">this<\/a>\u00a0reflection.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">So I appreciated this article by Douglas Murray, at the <em>Free Press<\/em> (behind a paywall), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thefp.com\/p\/things-worth-remembering-seeing-god\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">On Seeing God in a Cat<\/a>.\u00a0 He writes about the wonderful Christian poetry of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Christopher_Smart\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Christopher Smart<\/a> (1722-1771), a poetic genius who lost his mind, to the point of being consigned to a madhouse for \u201creligious mania\u201d in the Enlightenment \u201cAge of Reason.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His masterpiece, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jubilate_Agno\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Jubilate Agno<\/a> (\u201cRejoice in the Lamb\u201d), was not discovered and published until 1939.\u00a0 He anticipates highly structured free verse by two centuries in some 1,200 lines, each of which begins with with either \u201cLet. . .\u201d or \u201cFor. . .\u201d\u00a0 The complete poem is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pseudopodium.org\/repress\/jubilate\/index.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It is very eccentric and bears traces of Smart\u2019s addled condition and there is something comical about much of it.\u00a0 But it is also profound.\u00a0 I would say its main theme is that of the Psalms, whose poetic form he is emulating:<span id=\"en-ESV-15477\" class=\"text Ps-96-11\"><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Let\u00a0the heavens be glad, and let\u00a0the earth rejoice;<br>\nlet\u00a0the sea roar, and all that fills it;<br>\n<strong><sup>\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0let\u00a0the field exult, and everything in it!<br>\nThen shall all\u00a0the trees of the forest sing for joy<br>\n<strong><sup>\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0before the\u00a0Lord, for he comes,<br>\nfor he comes\u00a0to judge the earth.\u00a0 (Psalm 96:11-13)<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"en-ESV-16401\" class=\"text Ps-150-6\">Let\u00a0everything that has breath praise the\u00a0<span class=\"small-caps\">Lord<\/span>! (Psalm 150:6)<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>That includes cats.\u00a0 The most famous section of <em>Jubilate Agno<\/em> is about Smart\u2019s cat Jeffrey, his sole companion while he was locked up in the asylum.\u00a0 You don\u2019t have to be a cat person to appreciate how Jeffrey, in just being a cat and doing what cats do, is glorifying the Living God.<\/p>\n<p>From the <a quickness.<\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">For then he leaps up to catch the musk, which is the blessing of God upon his prayer.<\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">For he rolls upon prank to work it in.<\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">For having done duty and received blessing he begins to consider himself.<\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">For this he performs in ten degrees.<\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">For first he looks upon his forepaws to see if they are clean.<\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">For secondly he kicks up behind to clear away there.<\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">For thirdly he works it upon stretch with the forepaws extended.<\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">For fourthly he sharpens his paws by wood.<\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">For fifthly he washes himself.<\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">For sixthly he rolls upon wash.<\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">For seventhly he fleas himself, that he may not be interrupted upon the beat.<\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">For eighthly he rubs himself against a post.<\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">For ninthly he looks up for his instructions.<\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">For tenthly he goes in quest of food.<\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">For having consider\u2019d God and himself he will consider his neighbour.<\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">For if he meets another cat he will kiss her in dallying.<\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">For when his day\u2019s work is done his business more properly begins.<\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">For he keeps the Lord\u2019s watch in the night against the adversary.<\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">For he counteracts the powers of darkness by his electrical skin and glaring eyes.<\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">For he counteracts the Devil, who is death, by brisking about the life.<\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">For in his morning orisons he loves the sun and the sun loves him.<\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">For he is of the tribe of Tiger.<\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">For the Cherub Cat is a term of the Angel Tiger.<\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">For he has the subtlety and hissing of a serpent, which in goodness he suppresses.<\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">For he will not do destruction, if he is well-fed, neither will he spit without provocation.<\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">For he purrs in thankfulness, when God tells him he\u2019s a good Cat.<\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">For he is an instrument for the children to learn benevolence upon.<\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">For every house is incomplete without him and a blessing is lacking in the spirit.<\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">For the Lord commanded Moses concerning the cats at the departure of the Children of Israel from Egypt.<\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">For every family had one cat at least in the bag.<\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">For the English Cats are the best in Europe.<\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">For he is the cleanest in the use of his forepaws of any quadruped.<\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">For the dexterity of his defence is an instance of the love of God to him exceedingly.<\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">For he is the quickest to his mark of any creature.<\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">For he is tenacious of his point.<\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">For he is a mixture of gravity and waggery.<\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">For he knows that God is his Saviour.<\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">For there is nothing sweeter than his peace when at rest.<\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">For there is nothing brisker than his life when in motion.<\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">For he is of the Lord\u2019s poor and so indeed is he called by benevolence perpetually\u2014Poor Jeoffry! poor Jeoffry! the rat has bit thy throat.<\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">For I bless the name of the Lord Jesus that Jeoffry is better.<\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">For the divine spirit comes about his body to sustain it in complete cat.<\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">For his tongue is exceeding pure so that it has in purity what it wants in music.<\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">For he is docile and can learn certain things.<\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">For he can set up with gravity which is patience upon approbation.<\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">For he can fetch and carry, which is patience in employment.<\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">For he can jump over a stick which is patience upon proof positive.<\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">For he can spraggle upon waggle at the word of command.<\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">For he can jump from an eminence into his master\u2019s bosom.<\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">For he can catch the cork and toss it again.<\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">For he is hated by the hypocrite and miser.<\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">For the former is afraid of detection.<\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">For the latter refuses the charge.<\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">For he camels his back to bear the first notion of business.<\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">For he is good to think on, if a man would express himself neatly.<\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">For he made a great figure in Egypt for his signal services.<\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">For he killed the Ichneumon-rat very pernicious by land.<\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">For his ears are so acute that they sting again.<\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">For from this proceeds the passing quickness of his attention.<\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">For by stroking of him I have found out electricity.<\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">For I perceived God\u2019s light about him both wax and fire.<\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">For the Electrical fire is the spiritual substance, which God sends from heaven to sustain the bodies both of man and beast.<\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">For God has blessed him in the variety of his movements.<\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">For, tho he cannot fly, he is an excellent clamberer.<\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">For his motions upon the face of the earth are more than any other quadruped.<\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">For he can tread to all the measures upon the music.<\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">For he can swim for
