{"id":67420,"date":"2023-06-21T06:00:38","date_gmt":"2023-06-21T10:00:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/geneveith\/?p=67420"},"modified":"2023-06-17T15:47:42","modified_gmt":"2023-06-17T19:47:42","slug":"queerness-as-the-redemptive-message-of-christianity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/geneveith\/2023\/06\/queerness-as-the-redemptive-message-of-christianity\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Queerness as the redemptive message of Christianity&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/305\/2023\/06\/church-door-with-pride-flag-1-scaled.jpeg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-67457\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/305\/2023\/06\/church-door-with-pride-flag-1-scaled.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"745\" height=\"768\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We often assume that if we give in just a little, the other side will be satisfied.\u00a0 But it never is, pushing for more and more and more, going to ever greater extremes.<\/p>\n<p>The issue in progressive churches is no longer gay rights, or accepting LGBTQ+ members and pastors, or performing same-sex weddings, or being inclusive of transgendered individuals.\u00a0 Rather, all of this is only preparatory to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Queer_theology\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Queer Theology<\/a>, according to which <em>Christianity itself<\/em> is all about homosexuality and transgenderism.<\/p>\n<div id=\"premium-content\">\n<p>In order to know what is happening in mainline churches and liberal seminaries, you must read\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.realclearinvestigations.com\/articles\/2023\/06\/13\/queering_jesus_how_its_going_mainstream_at_progressive_churches_and_top_divinity_schools_903535.html?mc_cid=11f1150411\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Queering Jesus: How It\u2019s Going Mainstream at Progressive Churches and Top Divinity Schools<\/a>.\u00a0 The article, by John Murawski of RealClearInvestigations, shows just how pervasive \u201cqueer theology\u201d has become in these\u00a0 ostensibly Christian circles.\u00a0 Here is an excerpt, with my bolds:<\/p>\n<div>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Progressive churches are moving beyond gay rights, even beyond transgender acceptance, and venturing into the realm of \u201cqueer theology.\u201d\u00a0 <\/strong><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Rather than merely settling for the acceptance of gender-nonconforming people within existing marital norms and social expectations, queer theology questions heterosexual assumptions and binary gender norms as limiting, oppressive and anti-biblical, and <strong>centers queerness as the redemptive message of Christianity<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props='{\"201341983\":0,\"335559739\":160,\"335559740\":259}'>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"title-position\">\n<div class=\"long-hero-details\">\n<div class=\"long-hero-title\">\n<blockquote><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In this form of worship, \u201cqueering\u201d encourages the faithful to problematize, disrupt, and <strong>destabilize the assumptions behind heteronormativity and related social structures such as monogamy, marriage, and capitalism.<\/strong> These provocative theologians and ministers assert that queerness is not only natural and healthy but biblically celebrated. They assert that God is not the patron deity of the respectable, the privileged, and the comfortable, but rather <strong>God has a \u201cpreferential option\u201d for the promiscuous,<\/strong> the outcast, the excluded and the impure. . . .<\/span><\/p>\n<div>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Queer theology presents itself as an apocalyptic,\u202frevival\u202fmovement, <strong>rendering queer people as angels and saints who are a living\u202fforetaste of\u202fwhat\u2019s to come<\/strong>, when all binaries and man-made social constructs fall away as remnants of heterosexual oppression and European colonialism. <strong>There is a sense in which to be queer is to be the chosen people, those favored by God to spread the good news<\/strong>.\u202f<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>I can\u2019t bring myself to quote any more of what Murawski describes and critiques on this blog.\u00a0 Read it yourself.<\/p>\n<p>This is not just the speculations of academic theologians.\u00a0 Murawski shows how this is showing up everywhere in mainline churches.<\/p>\n<p>We keep hearing that the split in the United Methodist Church, the Anglican Church in North America (ACNA) breaking away from the Episcopal Church, the North American Lutheran Church (NALC) breaking away from the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, the revolt of global Anglicans against Canterbury are all about \u201caccepting gay pastors\u201d or the like.\u00a0 But the bigger issue is surely the rise of Queer Theology and whether it will be allowed to replace actual Christianity.<\/p>\n<p>Back when the main issue with liberal theology was the higher critical approach to the Bible, as accompanied with the \u201csocial gospel,\u201d J. Gresham Machen wrote <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/42JWz3R\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Christianity and Liberalism,<\/a> in which he argued that liberal theology was not just a strain of Christianity or a theological option in the church universal.\u00a0 Rather, liberal theology is a <em>different religion<\/em> than Christianity.<\/p>\n<p>He was right then in 1923.\u00a0 And Queer Theology, as the decaying fruit of that rebellion against the authority of Scripture, is certainly a different religion than actual Christianity.<\/p>\n<p>This happens to be the 100th anniversary of the publication of that book.\u00a0 It is worth reading in light of what liberal theology has mutated into.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><iframe style=\"width: 120px; height:
