the world is running out of (expensive) ammunition; Shakespeare\u2019s First Folio Turns 400 (&amp; Milton\u2019s Copy Is Found).<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\">The Gaza War Is Spreading<\/h4>\n<p>Turkish president <a href=\"https:\/\/www.express.co.uk\/news\/world\/1829092\/Erdogan-Turkey-Israel-war-Gaza\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Recep Tayyin Erdogan<\/a> has threatened to go to war with Israel.<\/p>\n<p>So has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.the-sun.com\/news\/9518588\/hezbollah-chief-declare-war-israel\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Hezbollah<\/a>, the Iran-backed terrorist organization with perhaps the world\u2019s largest non-state military.\u00a0 Hezbollah boasts some 60,000 battle-hardened veterans of the war in Syria and a huge arsenal, including 150,000 rockets plus long-range missiles.\u00a0 Already Hezbollah in Lebanon, on the northern border of Israel, has been exchanging fire with Israelis.\u00a0 If the Israeli military goes full force into Gaza, that would mean fewer troops to oppose a northern invasion from Hezbollah.<\/p>\n<div id=\"premium-content\">\n<p>Yemen\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/International\/wireStory\/yemens-houthi-rebels-claim-attacks-israel-drawing-main-104514030\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Houthi<\/a> rebels, also affiliated with Iran, have also been launching missiles into Israel.\u00a0 Yemen is located all the way on the southern coast of the Arabian peninsula, almost 1,400 miles away.<\/p>\n<p>As <a href=\"https:\/\/pjmedia.com\/victor-davis-hanson\/2023\/11\/03\/one-sick-war-n4923589\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Victor Davis Hanson<\/a> reminds us, \u201cThere are 500 million Arabs in the world, and nearly 2 billion Muslims \u2014 but only 9 or so million Israelis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And here\u2019s a thought:\u00a0 Turkey is a member of NATO.\u00a0 If Turkey attacks Israel, as he is threatening to do, and if\u00a0 Israel strikes back, the America and Europe would presumably have to honor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nato.int\/cps\/en\/natohq\/topics_110496.htm\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Article 5<\/a> of the NATO treaty by going to war against Israel.\u00a0 I know that\u2019s not going to happen, but such a dilemma would destroy NATO.<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\">Running Out of (Expensive) Ammunition<\/h4>\n<p>With U.S. and so many other countries sending military aid to Ukraine and now Israel, the world is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/world\/europe\/wars-push-up-demand-for-weapons-sparking-fears-of-shortages-57d664ad\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">running out of ammunition<\/a>.\u00a0 And those artillery shells are expensive!<\/p>\n<p>Before these wars broke out, one NATO-standard 155 millimeter artillery shell cost an already-expensive $2,100.\u00a0 Today, the inexorable economic law of supply and demand being what it is, that shell, described as \u201cone of the most coveted objects in the world right now,\u201dcosts $8,400.<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\" data-type=\"paragraph\">Shakespeare\u2019s First Folio Turns 400 (&amp; Milton\u2019s Copy Is Found)<\/h4>\n<p>To turn to more pleasant news, though perhaps on a topic that only us English major types would get excited about, this year is the 400th anniversary of the 1623 publication of Shakespeare\u2019s First Folio.<\/p>\n<p>That book collected virtually of Shakespeare\u2019s works (though a few referred to during his lifetime have been lost).\u00a0 It contains 36 of his plays, 17 of which\u2013<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rsc.org.uk\/news\/celebrating-the-plays-that-might-have-been-lost#:~:text=Macbeth%2C%20Julius%20Caesar%2C%20As%20You,to%20publish%20the%20First%20Folio.\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">including<\/a> <em>Macbeth<\/em>, <em>Julius Caesar<\/em>, and <em>The Tempest<\/em>\u2013were previously unpublished and would have been lost to us without the Folio.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.firstthings.com\/web-exclusives\/2023\/10\/shakespeares-first-folio-turns-400\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Nathan M. Anthiel<\/a> has written an excellent piece for <em>First Things<\/em> on the First Folio and its significance.\u00a0 In the course of which, he tells of what has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/books\/2019\/sep\/16\/when-milton-met-shakespeare-poets-notes-on-bard-appear-to-have-been-found\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">called<\/a> \u201cone of the most important literary discoveries of modern times,\u201d which happened just a few years ago, and yet I completely missed it until now.<\/p>\n<p>Penn State English professor Claire Bourne and Cambridge University fellow Jason Scott-Warren discovered that a copy of the First Folio in the Free Library of Philadelphia <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/books\/2019\/sep\/16\/when-milton-met-shakespeare-poets-notes-on-bard-appear-to-have-been-found\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">belonged to the poet John Milton<\/a>, who marked and commented upon the passages that stood out for him.<\/p>\n<p>Thus we can see the immediate impact of the greatest writer in English on the second greatest writer in English!<\/p>\n<p>Read <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/books\/2019\/sep\/16\/when-milton-met-shakespeare-poets-notes-on-bard-appear-to-have-been-found\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">this account<\/a>, from 2019, of the discovery.<\/p>\n<p>I would just add that one of my most prized books is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/First-Folio-Shakespeare-Norton-Facsimile\/dp\/0393039854?crid=17D3YOB0XAM0O&amp;keywords=shakespeare%27s+first+folio+facsimile&amp;qid=1699031663&amp;sprefix=shakespeare+s+first+folio+facsimile%2Caps%2C145&amp;sr=8-2&amp;ufe=app_do%3Aamzn1.fos.f5122f16-c3e8-4386-bf32-63e904010ad0&amp;linkCode=ll1&amp;tag=cranach00-20&amp;linkId=710641dcb18d702349c54030917c556e&amp;language=en_US&amp;ref_=as_li_ss_tl\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Facsimile of the First Folio<\/a>, signed by the editor Charlton Hinman, inventor of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hinman_collator\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Hinman Collator<\/a> (a story in itself), whom I got to know personally.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><iframe style=\"width: 120px;
