{"id":7534,"date":"2011-01-31T06:00:52","date_gmt":"2011-01-31T11:00:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.geneveith.com\/?p=7534"},"modified":"2011-01-31T06:00:52","modified_gmt":"2011-01-31T11:00:52","slug":"egypt-explodes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/geneveith\/2011\/01\/egypt-explodes\/","title":{"rendered":"Egypt explodes"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p>The Egyptian protests against its authoritarian regime have escalated, to the point of revolution.\u00a0 Even though President Mubarak has shut off internet access and most cell phone connections, the protesters have succeeded in shutting down the government.\u00a0 The army was called out, but is apparently taking the side of the people, a key development in a military dictatorship.\u00a0 The police had been battling the protesters with truncheons, tear gas, and guns.\u00a0 The death toll is unknown.\u00a0 But now the police have disappeared.<\/p>\n<p>Instead of freedom, we now see social breakdown.\u00a0 Looters are plundering everything, as they did in Iraq when Saddam\u2019s regime was overthrown.\u00a0 A culture that relies on strong external controls to ensure social order can go wild when those external controls are no longer there.\u00a0 That seems to be happening here.\u00a0 Are all Islamic countries going to do that, due to being all Law, as opposed to societies influenced by Christianity, which stresses inner transformation through the Gospel?\u00a0 Meanwhile, in Egypt, the jihadist Muslim Brotherhood is organizing vigilantes to protect people\u2019s property.\u00a0 That\u2019s an ominous sign.<\/p>\n<div id=\"premium-content\">\nSee<a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/2011\/01\/29\/us-egypt-vigilante-trib-idUSTRE70S3AZ20110129\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"> Egypt vigilantes defend homes as police disappear | Reuters<\/a>\n<p>And now the Arab revolution seems to have now spread to Jordan!<\/p>\n<p>An op-ed piece in the Washington Post says that the uprisings show that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2011\/01\/28\/AR2011012803144.html?hpid=opinionsbox1\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">George Bush was right<\/a>, that people in the Islamic world do crave freedom and democracy.  Maybe so.  Then again, it didn\u2019t take us invading to bring down these tyrannies.
