{"id":8196,"date":"2011-04-20T06:00:31","date_gmt":"2011-04-20T10:00:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.geneveith.com\/?p=8196"},"modified":"2011-04-20T06:00:31","modified_gmt":"2011-04-20T10:00:31","slug":"maunday-wednesday","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/geneveith\/2011\/04\/maunday-wednesday\/","title":{"rendered":"Maundy Wednesday?"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p>This would harmonize an alleged inconsistency in the inerrant Bible:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Colin Humphreys of Cambridge University says discrepancies in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke as compared with John arose because they used an older calendar than the official Jewish one.<\/p>\n<p>He concluded the date was 1 April AD33.<\/p>\n<p>This could also mean Jesus\u2019 arrest, interrogation and separate trials did not all take place on one night only.<\/p>\n<p>Prof Humphreys believes his findings could present a case for finally fixing Easter Day to the first Sunday in April.<\/p>\n<p>In his new book, The Mystery Of The Last Supper, the metallurgist and materials scientist uses Biblical, historical and astronomical research to address the fundamental inconsistency about the event.<\/p>\n<p>While Matthew, Mark and Luke say the Last Supper coincided with the start of the Jewish festival of Passover, John claims it took place before Passover.<\/p>\n<div id=\"premium-content\">\n<p>\u201cThis has puzzled Biblical scholars for centuries. In fact, someone said it was \u2018the thorniest subject in the New Testament\u2019,\u201d he told the BBC\u2019s Today programme.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you look at all the events the Gospels record \u2013 between the Last Supper and the Crucifixion \u2013 there is a large number. It is impossible to fit them in between a Thursday evening and Friday morning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut I found that two different calendars were involved. In fact, the four gospels agree perfectly,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Prof Humphreys argues that Jewish people would never have mistaken the Passover meal for another meal because it is so important.<\/p>\n<p>He suggests that Matthew, Mark and Luke used an old-fashioned Jewish calendar \u2013 adapted from Egyptian usage at the time of Moses \u2013 rather than the official lunar calendar which was in widespread use at the time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn John\u2019s Gospel, he is correct in saying the Last Supper was before the Passover meal.
