{"id":8291,"date":"2011-04-29T05:31:46","date_gmt":"2011-04-29T09:31:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.geneveith.com\/?p=8291"},"modified":"2011-04-29T05:31:46","modified_gmt":"2011-04-29T09:31:46","slug":"whirlwinds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/geneveith\/2011\/04\/whirlwinds\/","title":{"rendered":"Whirlwinds"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p>I grew up in Oklahoma, right in tornado alley.\u00a0 We didn\u2019t have a basement or a cellar so when the sirens blew we would get in the car and drive through the wind, often us kids still in our pajamas, to the church basement.\u00a0 When we didn\u2019t have time, we\u2019d hide under our parents\u2019 bed.\u00a0 I remember vividly looking out their window and seeing a funnel bearing down.\u00a0\u00a0 I\u2019ve seen a lot of massive wreckage.\u00a0 Few things are as scary or as awe-inspiring as a tornado.\u00a0 But I never went through anything like what happened on Wednesday night and Thursday morning, with\u00a0 among the worst tornado outbreaks in history:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>At least 290 people were killed across six states \u2014 more than two-thirds of them in Alabama, where large cities bore the half-mile-wide scars the twisters left behind.<\/p>\n<p>The death toll from Wednesday\u2019s storms seems out of a bygone era, before Doppler radar and pinpoint satellite forecasts were around to warn communities of severe weather. Residents were told the tornadoes were coming up to 24 minutes ahead of time, but they were just too wide, too powerful and too locked onto populated areas to avoid a horrifying body count.<\/p>\n<div id=\"premium-content\">\n<p>\u201cThese were the most intense super-cell thunderstorms that I think anybody who was out there forecasting has ever seen,\u201d said meteorologist Greg Carbin at the National Weather Service\u2019s Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Okla.<\/p>\n<p>via <a href=\"http:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/s\/ap\/us_severe_weather\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Tornadoes devastate South, killing at least 290 \u2013 Yahoo!
