{"id":83261,"date":"2025-06-09T06:00:32","date_gmt":"2025-06-09T10:00:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/geneveith\/?p=83261"},"modified":"2025-06-06T14:08:01","modified_gmt":"2025-06-06T18:08:01","slug":"monday-miscellany-6-9-25","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/geneveith\/2025\/06\/monday-miscellany-6-9-25\/","title":{"rendered":"Monday Miscellany, 6\/9\/25"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><div class=\"yiv4490094899ydpa5844622content-wrap\">\n<h4><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/305\/2023\/03\/cranach-seal.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-65538\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/305\/2023\/03\/cranach-seal.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"276\"><\/a><\/h4>\n<p>Even liberal justices rule against reverse discrimination.\u00a0 A bigger percentage of blacks are \u201cChristian nationalists\u201d than whites.\u00a0 And China solves the range problem for electric vehicles.<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\">Even Liberal Justices Rule against Reverse Discrimination<\/h4>\n<p>Under <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eeoc.gov\/prohibited-employment-policiespractices\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">U.S. employment laws<\/a>, it is illegal to discriminate on the basis of race, sex, religion, or sexual orientation.\u00a0 Thus, companies may not refuse to hire or promote individuals who are black, female, Muslim, or homosexual.\u00a0 But those laws also mean that companies may not discriminate against individuals who are white, male, Christian, or heterosexual.<\/p>\n<div id=\"premium-content\">\n<p>The Supreme Court has ruled that so-called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/world-at-work\/us-supreme-court-revives-straight-womans-reverse-discrimination-case-2025-06-05\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201creverse discrimination\u201d<\/a> is also illegal and that charges of reverse discrimination may not be held to a higher burden of proof than minority discrimination.<\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.supremecourt.gov\/opinions\/24pdf\/23-1039_c0n2.pdf\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Ames v. Ohio Department of Youth Services<\/a>, Marlean Ames sued the state agency she had worked for since 2004, alleging that her gay supervisor passed her over for a promotion in favor of a less qualified gay women, then demoted her from her current position and replaced her with a gay man.\u00a0 Ames claimed that she was discriminated against because she is heterosexual.<\/p>\n<p>Lower courts ruled against her on the grounds that she had failed to establish \u201cbackground circumstances,\u201d the higher burden of proof that has been applied to reverse discrimination claims, which must provide evidence that the bias is from \u201cthat unusual employer who discriminates against the majority.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But the Supreme Court threw out the \u201cbackground circumstances\u201d requirement.\u00a0 Significantly, this was a <em>unanimous<\/em> ruling.\u00a0 The opinion was authored by the liberal black female justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, who wrote:\u00a0 \u201cBy establishing the same protections for every \u2018individual\u2019 \u2013 without regard to that individual\u2019s membership in a minority or majority group \u2013 Congress left no room for courts to impose special requirements on majority-group plaintiffs alone.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\">A Bigger Percentage of Blacks Are \u201cChristian Nationalists\u201d Than Whites<\/h4>\n<p>While some Christians do identify as \u201cChristian Nationalists,\u201d the term is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heritage.org\/conservatism\/commentary\/the-dog-whistle-christian-nationalism?gad_source=1&amp;gad_campaignid=10679077640&amp;gbraid=0AAAAACfelfy_LOymC-_59zAIf4EY5Em5B&amp;gclid=CjwKCAjwo4rCBhAbEiwAxhJlCegHvfRn-ospHjK0kLBlJAOdR_aYt-lG-wT_1AGyAGllYCR4d5TZWxoCACcQAvD_BwE\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">mostly used by progressives<\/a> to frighten voters and to motivate their base to oppose religious ideas in the public square.<\/p>\n<p>History professor Ansley Quiros has written a provocative post at the Patheos blog the\u00a0 Anxious Bench entitled <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/anxiousbench\/2025\/06\/a-rise-in-black-christian-nationalism\/#\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">A Rise in Black Christian Nationalism?<\/a><\/p>\n<p>She has mined the voluminous data from the <a class=\" decorated-link decorated-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.prri.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Public Religion Research Institute<\/a> about Americans\u2019 religious beliefs and found a surprising fact:\u00a0 Black Americans are more likely than white Americans to hold the beliefs associated with Christian Nationalism.<\/p>\n<p>She found that 34% of Black Americans hold such beliefs, compared to 30% of white Americans.\u00a0 (So do 28% of Hispanics and 21% of Asian Americans.)<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>When asked if they think U.S. laws should be based on Christian values, Black Americans and white Americans returned the same results, with 14% completely agreeing and 28% mostly agreeing. But when asked if being Christian was an important part of being American, a higher percentage of Black Americans completely agreed (14%) or mostly agreed (22%). Black Americans were in line with white, hispanic, AAPI [Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders], and multiracial Americans in responses to the prompt \u201cIf the U.S. moves away from our Christian foundations, we won\u2019t have a country anymore,\u201d and polled slightly higher in favor of the statement \u201cThe U.S. government should declare American a Christian nation.\u201d When asked if \u201cGod has called Christians to exercise dominion of all areas of American society,\u201d\u00a0 30% of Black Americans completely agreed or agreed. Bafflingly, 6% Black Americans completely agreed with the statement \u201cAmerica was chosen as a new promised land for European Christians,\u201d a higher rate than any other group, albeit still very low.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I would argue that such beliefs among all Christian demographics are more in the category of pious sentiments than allegiance to a particular theological-political ideology.<\/p>\n<p>Though Republicans made big inroads with black Americans in the last presidential election, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/kamala-harris-underperformed-three-demographics-1981222#:~:text=Black%20voters%20have%20long%20been,Trump%20got%2012%20percent%20support.\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">86% still voted for Kamala Harris<\/a> (which was less than the 92% who had voted for Biden).\u00a0 These Harris voters must have included most of these \u201cChristian Nationalists.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Interestingly, Quiros also found that black Americans are the racial group that scores highest in beliefs associated with the Q-Anon conspiracy theory.\u00a0 Agreeing, for example,\u00a0 that \u201cthe government, media, and financial worlds in the U.S. are controlled by a group of Satan worshipping pedophiles who run a global child sex-trafficking operation.\u201d Some 24% of Black Americans believe such things, as compared to 19% of all Americans.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\">China Solves the Range Problem for Electric Vehicles<\/h4>\n<p>One of the factors limiting the appeal of electric vehicles is \u201crange anxiety,\u201d the worry about running out of charge on a long trip, plus the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kbb.com\/car-advice\/how-long-charge-tesla\/#:~:text=Supercharger%20or%20other%20DC%20fast,miles%20of%20range%20per%20hour.\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">long time<\/a> it can take\u2013an hour or more\u2013to fully charge the vehicle.<\/p>\n<p>But China seems to be solving those problems with the development of Extended Range Electronic Vehicles (EREV) and super-fast chargers.<\/p>\n<p>Bloomberg reports on these technology breakthroughs in an article entitled <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.is\/VySZU#selection-1153.0-1159.118\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">China\u2019s 1,000-Mile EVs Render Range Anxiety Obsolete<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div>The new technology is really a variation of the hybrid, a car that has both an electric and a gasoline engine.\u00a0 In today\u2019s hybrids, the gasoline engine does most of the work, but the range is extended by the electric motor.\u00a0 In the EREVs, the electric engine does most of the work, with the gasoline motor continually recharging it.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The recent Shanghai auto show unveiled a mid-sized SUV from the Chinese auto giant Huawei that can go 1,000 miles before it needs to be recharged, which, using Huawei\u2019s new technology, can be done in 15 minutes.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/chinese-electric-cars-you-can-buy-in-europe-not-us-2024-9#:~:text=Chinese%20EVs%20you%20can%20buy%20in%20Europe,Europe%20%E2%80%94%20but%20not%20in%20the%20US.\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Americans can\u2019t buy Chinese electric cars<\/a>.\u00a0 \u00a0President Biden slapped a 100% tariff on them and imposed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/tesla-criticizes-biden-plan-to-ban-chinese-tech-in-cars-2024-11\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">regulatory restrictions<\/a> on Chinese software.\u00a0 With President Trump\u2019s additional tariffs, not only on the cars but on their components, the fees come to nearly\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/chinese-electric-car-get-ready-to-pay-250-percent-tariff-2025-4#:~:text=That%20includes%20the%20145%25%20tariffs,the%20US%20for%20good%20measure.\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">250%.<\/a> So no American companies are importing them.\u00a0 European countries are, though, as are other nations, including near-by Mexico.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Even liberal justices rule against reverse discrimination.\u00a0 A bigger percentage of blacks are &#8220;Christian nationalists&#8221;
