{"id":8646,"date":"2011-06-07T06:00:06","date_gmt":"2011-06-07T10:00:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.geneveith.com\/?p=8646"},"modified":"2011-06-07T06:00:06","modified_gmt":"2011-06-07T10:00:06","slug":"10000-adams-and-eves","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/geneveith\/2011\/06\/10000-adams-and-eves\/","title":{"rendered":"10,000 Adams and Eves"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p>Thus far the main controversy between Christianity and mainline scientists has been over evolution. \u00a0Many Christians have tried to resolve that dilemma by embracing \u201ctheistic evolution,\u201d the notion that God did create every living thing, but that He used evolution to do it. \u00a0(Never mind that Darwin\u2019s theory of evolution specifically insists on the randomness of mutations and of natural selection. \u00a0Believing that evolution is directed is beyond the pale of actual Darwinism and is just another form of Intelligent Design, despite what the theistic evolutionists claim.) \u00a0Anyway, theistic evolutionists often still affirmed the historical existence of some kind of Adam and Eve, the first humans however they evolved, who, in some way, fell from their paradisal state and transmitted original sin to their descendants, who were redeemed by Christ, the Second Adam.<\/p>\n<p>But now a new front in the battle has opened up, which, according to <em>Christianity Today, <\/em>is raising new questions and opening up a new level of controversy. \u00a0According to recent genetic evidence, the human race did not begin with two people. \u00a0Rather, it must have begun with a population of around 10,000. \u00a0Otherwise, according to the geneticists, there is no way to account for the genetic diversity that we can currently observe. \u00a0See\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.christianitytoday.com\/ct\/2011\/june\/historicaladam.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">The Search for the Historical Adam | Christianity Today | A Magazine of Evangelical Conviction<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"premium-content\">\nIt\u2019s hard to imagine how 10,000 creatures could, at the same, evolve into the same species. \u00a0I can\u2019t help but wonder where they came from. \u00a0Who were their parents? \u00a0(Can anyone explain how the geneticists answer that?)\n<p>An accompanying editorial in <em>Christianity Today <\/em>says that without an historical Adam and Eve, the whole Gospel comes apart, since there would be no original sin and no \u201cSecond Adam\u201d who could redeem us. \u00a0Does that take it too far? \u00a0 Could \u201cAdam,\u201d which means literally \u201cman,\u201d refer to human beings in a collective way, all of whom have re-enacted the Fall in their own lives,whereupon Christ, in His Incarnation, did indeed become \u201cman\u201d and thus \u201cAdam,\u201d to redeem the human race. \u00a0Some are arguing that a story can be true in its meaning, even if it does not recount literal historical events. \u00a0Should Christians be seeking an interpretation like that? \u00a0Or reject the genetic findings? \u00a0Or just not jump to conclusions, since scientific findings are never complete and are themselves always being re-interpreted?<\/p>\n<p>At any rate, I suppose this evidence should bother me or shake my faith in the Bible, but, strangely, it does not. \u00a0How about you?<\/p><\/div>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Thus far the main controversy between Christianity and mainline scientists has been over evolution. \u00a0Many Christians have tried to resolve that dilemma by embracing \u201ctheistic evolution,\u201d the notion that God did create every living thing, but that He used evolution to do it. \u00a0(Never mind that Darwin\u2019s theory of evolution specifically insists on the randomness [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1281,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[5,8],"tags":[86,598,907],"class_list":["post-8646","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-apologetics","category-bible","tag-adam-and-eve","tag-creationism","tag-genetics"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v21.1 -
