{"id":9938,"date":"2011-11-03T05:45:43","date_gmt":"2011-11-03T09:45:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.geneveith.com\/?p=9938"},"modified":"2011-11-03T05:45:43","modified_gmt":"2011-11-03T09:45:43","slug":"beware-of-greeks-fearing-gifts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/geneveith\/2011\/11\/beware-of-greeks-fearing-gifts\/","title":{"rendered":"Beware of Greeks fearing gifts"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p>The Greeks founded Europe, and now they may end it.\u00a0 And the vehicle for both is the same:\u00a0 Democracy.<\/p>\n<p>The European powers carefully crafted a deal to bail out Greece, forgiving half of their debt at the cost of significant reforms and austerity measures.\u00a0 With this agreement, the world\u2019s stock markets soared.\u00a0 But then the Greek government, despite its earlier agreement, suddenly decided to put the accord to the vote of the people.\u00a0 Since the population seems opposed to\u00a0 austerity, the prospect of a referendum has cast the agreement into doubt, sending the world\u2019s stock markets into another dive and shaking the economic foundations of the Eurozone.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>World leaders convening at this resort [Cannes] for a long-planned summit find themselves confronting a suddenly acute crisis over Greece and signs of an economic slowdown throughout Europe that may narrow their room for action.<\/p>\n<div id=\"premium-content\">\nGreek Prime Minister George Papandreou left a cabinet meeting in Athens early Wednesday with his government intact \u2014 for now \u2014 and backing his plan to hold a national referendum on the country\u2019s latest international rescue program.\n<p>World leaders will gather in Cannes, France, on Nov. 3 and Nov. 4 to discuss Europe\u2019s debt crisis and other economic issues. Thousands of protesters are gathering in France to urge the G-20 leaders to focus on the poor.<\/p>\n<p>But his call for a popular vote on Tuesday has jeopardized the rescue plan and upended the agenda for Group of 20 leaders. Papandreou has been called to a meeting here Wednesday night to explain himself.<\/p>\n<p>This was to have been a summit where the G-20 \u2014 the forum where industrialized nations and the leading developing economies compare notes on the world economy \u2014 puts its stamp on a plan that convincingly appeared to settle Europe\u2019s lingering financial crisis.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, with Cannes under a security lockdown that has made its streets into a virtual ghost town, the group will be looking for ways to avoid even greater problems.
