<\/iframe>\n<\/p>The New York Times<\/em> is shocked, shocked to hear Pope Francis say there is a gay lobby at the Vatican.<\/p>\nThe suggestion that a gay mafia exists within the Curia has been a major news item in Italy and has generated stories round the world. The reactions have been <a href=\"http:\/\/vaticaninsider.lastampa.it\/en\/the-vatican\/detail\/articolo\/gay-gay-gay-francesco-francis-francisco-25578\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">diverse<\/a> \u2014 and have reinforced the stereotypes of the major news outlets.<\/p>\nThe New York Times<\/em>\u2018 report is thorough, earnest and a bit dry, but misses the real story. Some of the Italian newspapers are having fits of joy in reporting on shadowy cabals of gay monsignori \u00a0cavorting in the Vatican \u2014 I am waiting for Freemasons to enter the story any day now.\u00a0However the <a href=\"http:\/\/worldcrunch.com\/rss\/culture-society\/the-pope-039-s-quot-gay-lobby-quot-remark-makes-vatican-tremble\/homosexuality-pope-francis-vatican-city-\/c3s12337\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Italian<\/a> press, along with the <a href=\"http:\/\/chiesa.espresso.repubblica.it\/articolo\/1350536?eng=y\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">religion<\/a> press, appreciate this story is not about homosexuality but doctrine, discipline, and divided loyalties within the Vatican.<\/p>\nFor those not in the know \u2014 the story so far:<\/p>\nIn a June 6 meeting with members of the Latin American and Caribbean Confederation of Religious Pope Francis was purported to have said in a discussion of reforming the church\u2019s administration: \u201cIn the Curia, there are also holy people, really, there are holy people. But there also is a stream of corruption, there is that as well, it is true. \u2026 The \u2018gay lobby\u2019 is mentioned, and it is true, it is there \u2026 We need to see what we can do.\u201d<\/p>\nWhy \u201cpurported\u201d? Because the remarks were recorded in a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.reflexionyliberacion.cl\/articulo\/2729\/papa-francisco-dialoga-como-un-hermano-mas-con-la-clar.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">summary<\/a>\u00a0of the meeting posted on a Chilean Web site, Reflection and Liberation, and later translated into English by the blog\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/rorate-caeli.blogspot.com\/2013\/06\/pope-to-latin-american-religious-full.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Rorate Caeli<\/a>. The Milan newspaper Il Giornale<\/em> reported that after\u00a0Rorate Caeli\u00a0released the transcript, Vatican reporters <a href=\"http:\/\/www.johnthavis.com\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">John Thavis<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lastampa.it\/2013\/06\/11\/blogs\/san-pietro-e-dintorni\/francesco-curia-lobby-gay-ZhZxsd1uhHpSHtRU21pgEK\/pagina.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Marco Tosatti<\/a> reported the news as did AFP and the Madrid newspaper El Mundo \u2014 <\/em>and the world followed.<\/p>\nThe Times<\/em> begins its report by stating the suggestion there is a gay lobby is not shocking. What is shocking is that the pope would admit it.<\/p>\n<blockquote>For years, perhaps even centuries, it has been an open secret in Rome: That some prelates in the Vatican hierarchy are gay. But the whispers were amplified this week when Pope Francis himself, in a private audience, appears to have acknowledged what he called a \u201cgay lobby\u201d operating inside the Vatican, vying for power and influence.<\/p><\/blockquote>\nThe Times<\/em> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2013\/06\/13\/world\/europe\/pope-is-quoted-as-acknowledging-a-vatican-gay-lobby.html?partner=rssnyt&emc=rss&_r=0\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">news account<\/a>\u00a0lays out the story in detail,\u00a0offering context and diverse opinion as to the importance of the remarks. Yet for all its thoroughness the Times<\/em> misses the bigger picture of clergy cliques and divided loyalties.<\/p>\nBut never fear \u2014 the op-ed pages of the Times<\/em>\u00a0compounds its misinterpretation of the facts as Frank Bruni <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2013\/06\/16\/opinion\/sunday\/bruni-the-popes-gay-panic.html?partner=rssnyt&emc=rss\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">savages<\/a> the church for not being gay enough.<\/p>\n<blockquote>What was clearer was his acknowledgment \u2014 rare for a pope, and thus remarkable \u2014 of the church\u2019s worst-kept secret: a priesthood populous with gay men, even at the zenith. And that underscored anew the mystery and madness of the church\u2019s attitude about homosexuality. If homosexuality is no bar to serving as one of God\u2019s emissaries and interpreters, if it\u2019s no obstacle to being promoted to the upper rungs of the church\u2019s hierarchy, how can it be so wrong? It doesn\u2019t add up. There\u2019s an error in the holy arithmetic.<\/p><\/blockquote>\nIt also offers this snippet of information:<\/p>\n<blockquote>The Rev. James Martin, a Jesuit and an editor at large at the Catholic magazine America<\/em>, told me that he\u2019s seen thoughtful though not scientifically rigorous estimates that anywhere from 25 to 50 percent of Catholic priests are gay. His own best guess is 30 percent. That\u2019s thousands and thousands of gay priests, some of whom must indeed be in the \u201cdeep-seated\u201d end of the tendency pool. Martin believes that the vast majority of gay priests aren\u2019t sexually active. But some are, and Rome is certainly one of the many theaters where the conflict between the church\u2019s ethereal ideals and the real world play out.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n \nWhile the Italian press is as excited about this news as Frank Bruni, it has focused more on \u201clobby\u201d than on \u201cgay\u201d in their \u201cgay lobby\u201d stories. By this I mean the revelation of gay or homophile clergy is not the focus of the stories. Articles in La Repubblica<\/em> and Il Giornale<\/em> \u2014 translated in part by the <a href=\"http:\/\/rorate-caeli.blogspot.com\/2013\/06\/the-gay-lobby-confirmations-all-around.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Rorarte Caeli<\/a> website \u2014 place homosexuality in the context of a challenge to the magisterium of the Church, divided loyalties within the clergy to their ecclesiastical superiors over against their patrons, and the ongoing reform of the Curia.<\/p>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.finesettimana.org\/pmwiki\/uploads\/Stampa201306\/130613rodari.pdf\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">La Repubblica<\/em> <\/a>reports:<\/p>\n<blockquote>Gian Franco Svidercoschi, former vice-director of [Holy See daily] L\u2019Osservatore Romano<\/em>, knows how to read behind what was left unsaid by the Vatican. He explains: \u201cThe embarrassed silence of the Curia shows that the Pope\u2019s words are true.\u00a0This lobby which is talked about evidently has existed for a while, though I believe it to be composed by mid-level characters of the Roman Curia itself.<\/p><\/blockquote>\nWhile <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ilgiornale.it\/news\/interni\/i-gay-nella-chiesa-sono-uneresia-926619.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Il Giornale<\/em><\/a> writes:<\/p>\n<blockquote>But the problem of the homosexual lobby in the sacred palaces could be just the tip of the iceberg: there are those who are convinced that the great challenge of the new Pope is to tackle the problem. One of those is Fr. Dariusz Oko, theology progessor at the Pontifical University John Paul II, in Krakow, who in December had publicly denounced the gay lobby in the Vatican, and who reaffirms it today: \u201cThe Holy Father has confirmed that which everyone had known for many years,\u201d he explains, \u201cI think that the wall of\u00a0omert\u00e0\u00a0that has existed for a long time is destroyed.<\/p><\/blockquote>\nIl Giornale<\/em> ties Francis\u2019 comments to reform instituted by Pope Benedict XVI.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\u201cThe Holy Father must combat this heresy that has spread throughout the Church.\u201d. And the root of the problem, Fr. Oko confirms, is to be found in the places of formation: \u201cWho, in Italy, is interested in the current situation of the seminaries?\u201d,[Oko] asks. \u201cAnd there is where the future of the Church is decided!\u00a0The only way forward is to continue the revolution of Ratzinger, who wished to \u2018free\u2019 the seminaries from gay educators and homosexual seminarians.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\nI believe the National Catholic Register<\/em> has the best handle on this story. In a news analysis piece entitled \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncregister.com\/daily-news\/a-vatican-gay-lobby-this-is-not-the-focus-of-the-question#When:2013-06-14%2021:52:01\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">A Vatican \u2018Gay Lobby<\/a>\u2019? This Is Not the Focus of the Question\u201d,\u00a0Andrea Gagliarducci writes:<\/p>\n<blockquote>Under Benedict XVI\u2019s pontificate, actions against priestly lobbies and careerism were carried out. One reform that had the potential to correct these problems was Benedict XVI\u2019s decision to limit access to seminaries in\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncregister.com\/daily-news\/a-vatican-gay-lobby-this-is-not-the-focus-of-the-question#http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/roman_curia\/congregations\/ccatheduc\/documents\/rc_con_ccatheduc_doc_20051104_istruzione_en.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cThe Instruction\u00a0Concerning<\/a> the Criteria for the Discernment of Vocation With Regard to Persons With Homosexual Tendencies\u00a0in View of Their Admission to the Seminary and to Holy Orders.\u201d\u00a0Issued in November 2005, it was one of Benedict\u2019s first acts of governance as pope. The instruction denies access to seminaries to anyone who has in any way, even superficially, supported a \u201cgay culture\u201d or a gender culture. According to one source who works in a Vatican congregation and asked for anonymity, the instruction was intended to avoid even the opportunity for a \u201cgay lobby.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\nThe problem for the Times<\/em> is that the \u201cgay lobby\u201d story runs contrary to the narrative it ha followed since election of Pope Francis. The Times<\/em> and other outlets have sought to play off the popes against each other, with Francis being the anti-Benedict. Yes they have very different styles but the \u201cgay lobby\u201d story shows Francis\u2019 determination to complete the work begun by Benedict. The story here is continuity not change.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The New York Times is shocked, shocked to hear Pope Francis say there is a gay lobby at the Vatican.
