<\/iframe><\/p>\nWant to get drunk fast?<\/p>\nWatch this video and take a swig of an adult beverage every time Chris Cuomo interrupts Bill Donohue.<\/p>\nAfter 12 minutes, you won\u2019t be able to stand up.<\/p>\nCuomo brought Donohue onto CNN\u2019s morning show New Day<\/em> in the latter\u2019s role as head of the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights. The topic was the Arizona law that was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.startribune.com\/politics\/national\/247207341.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">just vetoed<\/a> by Governor Jan Brewer. As you may recall, the law would have allowed anyone to decline to do business with someone on religious grounds. Gays were believed to have been the main targets, in sympathy with Christians who believe homosexuality is wrong.<\/p>\nMeaty stuff for a discussion, to be sure. What if the businessman believes blacks are inferior? Conversely, without the law, would a Jewish photographer be forced to shoot pictures at a Klan or skinhead wedding?<\/p>\nAnd the talk is actually pretty productive for the first half of the interview. But then Cuomo makes it a quarrel. Either that or badgering. Sometimes he doesn\u2019t even wait for Donohue to finish a sentence before adding more preachments thinly veiled as questions.<\/p>\nHere are some excerpts from where the two discuss a recent situation in New Mexico, of a photographer who didn\u2019t want to take pictures at a gay wedding. Donohue actually says he has \u201cno sympathy\u201d for such people. Then he raises fears about forcing churches to accept gay weddings.<\/p>\n\u201cNo, we\u2019re not going there,\u201d Cuomo says at first. Then when Donohue insists, Cuomo gets more argumentative, moving from law to morality.<\/p>\nDonohue:<\/strong> We feel, people of faith, that our rights are being whittled away in the name of gay rights having to trump ours. We need to have an honest discussion. I\u2019d like to see a moratorium on this \u2026<\/p>\nCuomo:<\/strong> How does gay marriage compromise your rights?<\/p>\nDonohue:<\/strong> The problem with gay marriage is this: It makes a smorgasbord. It basically says that there\u2019s no profound difference, socially speaking, between marriage between a man and woman \u2014 the only union that can create a family \u2014 and other examples. I don\u2019t \u2026<\/p>\nCuomo:<\/strong> Who says that\u2019s the purpose of marriage? What if you want lifelong companionship and commitment?<\/p>\nDonohue:<\/strong> If a man and woman don\u2019t have sex, we can\u2019t reproduce, can we? We can\u2019t propagate \u2026<\/p>\nCuomo:<\/strong> You don\u2019t have to be married to propagate.<\/p>\nDonohue:<\/strong> No, that\u2019s right, you \u2026<\/p>\nCuomo:<\/strong> And you don\u2019t have to want kids to be married.<\/p>\n<\/p>\nDonohue makes the mistake of calling for marriage as \u201cthe privileged position,\u201d rather than favoring \u201calternative lifestyles.\u201d Cuomo again puts him on the defensive, and it clearly rattles him.<\/p>\nCuomo:<\/strong> Why shouldn\u2019t they be equal? Why?<\/p>\nDonohue:<\/strong> Because \u2026<\/p>\nCuomo:<\/strong> What\u2019s your reason?<\/p>\nDonohue:<\/strong> Because it\u2019s in the best interests of society to have a one- \u2026<\/p>\nCuomo:<\/strong> Who says?<\/p>\nDonohue:<\/strong> I\u2019m a sociologist by training. Take a look at \u2026<\/p>\nCuomo:<\/strong> The divorce rate is over 50 percent \u2026<\/p>\nDonohue:<\/strong> Take a look at the literature \u2026<\/p>\nCuomo:<\/strong> \u2026 latchkey kids, broken homes \u2026<\/p>\nDonohue:<\/strong> Kids \u2026<\/p>\nCuomo:<\/strong> \u2026 social problems \u2026<\/p>\nDonohue:<\/strong> Kids \u2026<\/p>\nCuomo:<\/strong> \u2026 all during the era of how you wanted it.<\/p>\nDonohue:<\/strong> But, but, but no. Kids do best in an intact family. The evidence is overwhelming. It\u2019s in \u2026 you need a father and a mother \u2026<\/p>\nCuomo:<\/strong> You need love and you need people to care for you, gay or straight \u2026<\/p>\nDonohue:<\/strong> Once you go down the road of love as the condition of marriage \u2014 how far do you want to go with that? How \u2026<\/p>\nCuomo:<\/strong> So love shouldn\u2019t be part of marriage, but you should be straight?<\/p>\nAmong Cuomo\u2019s missteps: When Donohue says marriage is \u201cordained by nature and nature\u2019s God,\u201d he answers incredulously: \u201cMarriage was not ordained by nature! Most mammals don\u2019t couple!\u201d Did he really miss the phrasing from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.archives.gov\/exhibits\/charters\/declaration_transcript.html%20\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Declaration of Independence<\/a>?<\/p>\nCuomo also bobbles in bringing up Pope Francis\u2019 quote of \u2014 all together, now \u2014 \u201cWho am I to judge them?\u201d (Refresher course on what the pope was actually talking about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/getreligion\/2014\/01\/journalists-editing-pope-francis-who-are-we-to-judge\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">right here.<\/a>) Cuomo then suggests that Donohue is being judgmental in disapproving gay marriage.<\/p>\nDonohue\u2019s comeback is an interfaith defense: \u201cI have Christianity, I have Judaism, I have Muslims, I have <a href='https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/library\/mormonism' target='_blank'>Mormons<\/a>, I have most of the world who regard this idea as being bizarre, that two men should get married.\u201d<\/p>\nCuomo sidesteps: \u201cWell, first of all, you say love isn\u2019t important in marriage. Thank God I didn\u2019t say that, because my wife would want to kill me.\u201d<\/p>\nHow else could this have been done? Well, Cuomo could lined up two or more people of different viewpoints, then moderated. He could also have asked questions that didn\u2019t sound like bait.<\/p>\nAnd, of course, he could have allowed his guest to finish more sentences.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Want to get drunk fast?
