Video: The Growing Divisions In The Atheist Community

Video: The Growing Divisions In The Atheist Community June 28, 2018

In the aftermath of this post, Donovan and I found ourselves with a lot to say, so we hopped on YouTube to have a live chat. We discussed the latest trend that seems to be tearing through the atheist community and that is the rampant misrepresentation of each other’s views. We also discussed the overuse of hyperbole and the fact that there seems to be a growing group of atheists who work hard to shut down conversations they feel uncomfortable with. We touch on the ageing conversation about punching nazis and the alternatives Donovan and I prefer to violence. You can watch the chat in its entirety here:

The far left regressive atheists are a problem, as so ferocious is their opposition to all things Trump and the right, they attack liberals, centrists, and humanists. Study the history of the far left, and note how they always save far more venom for liberals and progressives.

We saw this happen last year. A mob of abusive atheists including Dan Arel, Kristi Winters, and Steve Shives sent, or encouraged others to send, threats of violence to the organisers of a conference.

Now, these regressive bullies are enabled by a group of pseudo-humanists and “skeptics”, including the likes of Ryan J Bell, Peter “Humanisticus” Ferguson, and Thomas Smith. They enable the antisemitism and pro-violence position of thugs like Arel. Bell is never a humanist, yet is a Humanist Chaplain at a university. He is not suited to that position.

Always stand up to these extremists as you would with far right racists. They are far more similar to one another than many realise. Both crave violence and the desire to dominate people and shut down the views of people they don’t like.

I call a lot of the people in question, such as Arel, Werleman, Ferguson, Bell, Eiynah, Shives, Myers, Zvan, Winters, etc, “New Racists”. They hide behind the language of social justice, often claiming they are “anti-racist”, only to enable Islamists and other extremists to throw racism and bigotry against progressive Muslims and liberals.

Chances are the leftists who do that (such as Nader and Stein) are actually Retrumplican or Russian plants.

Based on what evidence? You sound like a right-winger calling liberals and BLM “the real racists.”

A few, Greenwald, Norton, Blumenthal, Hersh, etc. all shill and spin pro-Kremin narratives and bullshit, but they a small number compared to the majority of the far left.

    Based on what evidence?”

The evidence is this entire article. It was written because regressive far left bullies, some of whom I class as “New Racists”, tore into Godless Mom. In particular, pseudo-Humanist and fraud Ryan J. Bell.

You sound like a right-winger calling liberals and BLM” the real racists.

Since I’m a liberal, I wouldn’t call liberals “the real racists”. Bizarre hot take there, RagingBee. You’re falling into the old trap of thinking far-left goons can’t be racist. This is after countless “anti-racists” getting caught up in antisemitism scandals.

How are you defining ‘far left’? In Godless Mom’s linked post she describes her political views (which are similar to my own). Do you consider those to be ‘far left’? They’re certainly well to the left of the Democratic Party in the USA (which would be considered a centrist or centre-right party outside the USA) and some are even to the left of socialist parties in Europe (including the Labour Party in the UK).

Godless Mom is part of the progressive left, certainly not far-left..

The term “far left” can be applied to:

    > The SWP (Socialist Workers Party)/tankie types. NB. Not sure what the US equivalent of these are.
    > The anti-West “anti-imperialist” types, who then defend and enable the imperialism and war crimes of other regimes. George Galloway is a good example.
    > The red part of the red-brown alliance on, say, Syria, where people on the left spread and support absurd conspiracy theories about false flags, in order to defend Assad and various war crimes. Max Blumenthal, Sy Hersh, Glenn Greenwald are good examples.
    > The regressive types, who are so into “intersectionalism” or “political correctness”, that they not only lose their liberal values, but become hostile to liberals. PZ Myers, Steve Shives, and Kristi Winters, are good examples.
    > The pro-violent “anybody to the right of Marx is a ‘Nazi’ thug-crowd. Often describe themselves as “anti-racist”, but usually have a history of racism and antisemitism. Dan Arel and CJ Werleman are good examples.

That is probably what I mean by “far left”. Others may have somewhat different views. They share quite a lot in common with the far right (horseshoe theory), and usually get really angry when you point that out to them. Tough shit. They fucking enable one another, and promote hate and abuse towards liberals and progressives.

Naturally, both the far left and far right don’t like people like GodlessMom. Which means she is doing it right.
