I did. Directly or indirectly, I was taught that anyone who is poor or homeless brought it on themselves, and if they would only make an effort, they could end their poverty. I just <em>knew<\/em> that laziness and poverty go hand in hand.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\" decorated-link decorated-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/acts-of-faith\/wp\/2017\/08\/03\/christians-are-more-than-twice-as-likely-to-blame-a-persons-poverty-on-lack-of-effort\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">According<\/a> to a Washington Post poll, 53% of white evangelical Protestants blame poverty on lack of individual effort, vs. only about 33% of atheists, agnostics, and the non-affiliated. Why do so many of us equate poverty with laziness?<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad ad-container hidden-xs\">\n<p class=\"\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Because \u201cthe Bible tells me so\u201d:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest, and poverty will come upon you like a robber, and want like an armed man. (Proverbs 24: 33-34)<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">Laziness leads to poverty;\u00a0hard work makes you rich. (Proverbs 10:4)<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">Good planning and hard work lead to\u00a0prosperity, but hasty\u00a0shortcuts lead to poverty. (Proverbs 21:5)<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">The soul of a lazy man desires, and has nothing; But the soul of the diligent shall be made rich. (Proverbs 13:4)<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">The poor you will always have with you. (John 12:8)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">No wonder many Christians believe that the poor brought their poverty on themselves. No wonder many of us are in no hurry to give money to <span style=\"color: #333399;\"><a style=\"color: #333399;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/gracecoloredglasses\/2021\/10\/where-your-treasure-is-how-would-jesus-handle-panhandlers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\" decorated-link\">panhandlers<\/a><\/span>. We believe the Bible. Whatever it says, it has to be true.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>Are you sure?<\/em><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<li>The Bible says, Those who conceal their sins do not prosper, but those who confess and renounce them find mercy. (Proverbs 28:13) \u2013 How many billionaires conceal illegal and dirty business dealings?<\/li>\n<li>The Bible says, A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger. (Proverbs 15:1) \u2013 Have you ever answered gently in an argument, and it didn\u2019t go well?<\/li>\n<li>The Bible says, Evildoers are trapped by their sinful talk, and so the innocent escape trouble. (Proverbs 12:13) \u2013 Do some evildoers get away with their evil doing? Do the innocent sometimes get wrongly punished?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Examples like these abound. If you\u2019ve been up to no good, it\u2019s better to come clean; in an argument, it\u2019s best not to escalate; etc.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">These are not guarantees. They are not promises from God. They need to be understood in the spirit in which they were written. This is common sense.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The same goes for our laziness verses: it\u2019s a good idea to be diligent in your work. Don\u2019t be a slacker. That\u2019s what these verses <em>mean<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Similarly, the passages may <em>seem to suggest<\/em> that if you are not prospering, it\u2019s because you\u2019re lazy \u2013 but that\u2019s not what they <em>mean<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Commercial: if you question \u201cbusiness as usual\u201d in Christianity \u2013 or want to question it \u2013 subscribe to my<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><a style=\"color: #333399;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/gracecoloredglasses\/newsletter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\" decorated-link\"> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">newsletter<\/span><\/i><\/a><\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and we can journey together!)<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\">Judge Not<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">When we take the laziness verses as \u201cGospel truth,\u201d the next obvious step is judgmentalism. Have you ever caught yourself thinking, \u201c<em>They<\/em>\u00a0don\u2019t want to be contributing members of society.\u00a0<em>They<\/em>\u00a0are happy to live off of <em>my<\/em> hard work.\u00a0<em>I could never live like that<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">If you think the poor enjoy living on the dole, begging for change, or sleeping on park benches, think again. Why would they be happy to live like that if you would not? Because you are more noble than they are? Because they are a bit less than human?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">If you would hate to live \u201clike that,\u201d you can assume that anyone else would too (unless perhaps they have a mental illness, and that\u2019s a whole other conversation).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>Maybe<\/em> the system that enables some of us to prosper also <span style=\"color: #333399;\"><a style=\"color: #333399;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/gracecoloredglasses\/2021\/10\/lies-we-tell-ourselves-about-poverty-and-the-poor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\" decorated-link\"><em>blocks<\/em><\/a><\/span> some others from prospering.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\">My brief bout of poverty<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">For two years, I qualified for welfare, but I didn\u2019t know it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">I worked hard as a Christian schoolteacher in Queens, NY with a salary that was way below the poverty line. I supplemented my meager income by also working as music director at my church. I worked two jobs and barely made ends meet. (Working for the church and being paid so poorly is another whole conversation.)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">When billionaire Michael Bloomberg said at a 2020 presidential debate (paraphrase) \u201cyes I\u2019m filthy rich, but I worked very hard to get all that money,\u201d it infuriated me. He <em>never<\/em> worked harder than I did those years in New York.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Since those lean years in New York, I have always stayed above the poverty line \u2013 but not because I worked hard. Because I married an engineer who has always been paid a decent salary.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">(Note 1: I\u2019m not saying \u201cmarry money\u201d here. I\u2019m saying wealth doesn\u2019t always come from hard work, and poverty doesn\u2019t always come from sloth. Note 2: some of the world\u2019s wealthiest people are a burden on society. They don\u2019t pay their share of taxes, they underpay their workers, and they have no shame in doing so. I was privileged to live in the Middle East for ten years, where I learned even more about the world, thanks to diverse friendships and extensive travel. For years, I've worked in advocacy for Palestinian justice. The more I learn, the more I see that the Palestinian issue is much like that of other oppressed and demonized groups, both in the past and today.
