But I\u2019ve recently discovered a great little library book that I think will be of interest both for avid fans, and for reluctant readers in search of a useful resource for making sense of Dickens\u2019 literary world.<\/p>\n<p><em> <em><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Walking-Dickens-London-Travellers-General\/dp\/0747811342\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Walking<\/a><\/strong><\/em><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Walking-Dickens-London-Travellers-General\/dp\/0747811342\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\"> <em>Dickens\u2019 London<\/em><\/a><\/strong><\/em> opens with some background information about the life and work of Charles Dickens. Then author Lee Jackson proposes a series of walking tours that lead you through the London of both Dickens and his characters.\u00a0 While the guide is presumably written for tourists, you can take the tours via Google Maps, or just using the pictures in the book and your imagination.<\/p>\n<p>At the end of each chapter is a reading from one of Dickens\u2019 novels.\u00a0 For me the selected passages not only gave me insight into Dickens\u2019 writing, but also confirmed that there were reasons he\u2019s not always my favorite author.\u00a0 That\u2019s okay.\u00a0 One can grow up to be a responsible, virtuous citizen, without ever cultivating a passion for expanses of detailed description.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What I loved:\u00a0 The history.<\/strong>\u00a0 The book is a treasure trove of information for those who want a glimpse into life in Victorian England.\u00a0 What was it like to make a living on the trash heaps (literally) at the edge of town?\u00a0 What kind of goods were imported on the docks of London, and was it more likely you\u2019d eat them, or they\u2019d eat you?\u00a0 Just as our parents\u2019 and grandparents\u2019 lives set the stage for our own, a clear picture of Victorian life illuminates the sources of the economic, political, and social movements that followed.\u00a0 You want to understand <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/holy_father\/leo_xiii\/encyclicals\/documents\/hf_l-xiii_enc_15051891_rerum-novarum_en.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Rerum Novarum<\/a>?\u00a0 Start with Dickens.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Verdict: <\/strong>I\u2019d happily stock this in my home library as a resource for both history and literature.\u00a0 I\u2019ll definitely be using it with my own students when it\u2019s their turn to study Dickens in high school.\u00a0 And I wouldn\u2019t complain if I got a chance to use it on the ground in London as well.\u00a0 Nice title, very well done.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I have the usual love-hate relationship with Dickens, felt by most of us who\u2019d rather be reading Sherlock Holmes.
