I went looking online to try to find a nice altar tile or wall plaque that has Hekate\u2019s Wheel, the Strophalos, on it. \u00a0Not only was it very difficult to find any that are good for delivery to Australia \u2013 but the prices were pretty full on. \u00a0It\u2019s possible I was looking in the wrong places.<\/p>\n

I saw on Pinterest that someone had used a circle of wood and burned the strophalos into it. \u00a0Very nice, and though I couldn\u2019t do the same, having no wood burning tools right now \u2013 I do have carving tools.<\/p>\n

I just needed a piece of wood. \u00a0I didn\u2019t care what type of wood \u2013 perhaps I should care, but getting it done is what was important. I found myself staring at the toilet paper roll storage holders in my bathroom, with their perfectly round bases\u2026<\/p>\n

No. \u00a0That\u2019s no good, for numerous reasons, not least we need those for storing the toilet paper!<\/p>\n

In Australia it\u2019s quite normal to frequently shop in \u201cthrift stores\u201d or as we call them opp (short for opportunity) shops. \u00a0In my town the main ones are St Vincent de Paul and Lifeline. \u00a0It was in Lifeline that found my circle of wood for $2.<\/p>\n

Perfect. \u00a0And that colour, it\u2019s a beautiful red colour that is perfect for me. \u00a0But it has one little problem, I am sure you can see it.
\nIt has a ceramic tile on top of it, stuck to it.<\/p>\n

I figured, I would try to remove the tile and use the wood for my needs. \u00a0And maybe use the tile for something as well, a pentagram tile maybe. \u00a0If I happened to break the tile, or just not be able to remove it? Well, it\u2019s only $2 so the risk is worth it.<\/p>\n

So I went at it with a screwdriver \u2013 I am adaptable like that. \u00a0Pop, off it came. \u00a0The only issue was, it had been stuck on with a smaller cork base. \u00a0Cork, stuck to the bottom of the tile and to the wood. \u00a0Sigh.<\/p>\n

Well, I would figure it out, I was sure.<\/p>\n

The next step, of course, was carving out the wheel itself. \u00a0Not an easy task when you are not artistic. \u00a0My cheat? I printed out a strophalos from my computer, cut around the edges of it and traced the outer wheel part.<\/p>\n

Then I had to use my own judgement. \u00a0I carefully, with much erasing, drew a second wheel about half a centimetre from the first one \u2013 the carving is wider than it looks. \u00a0Indeed if you look at the photo, it is actually sitting on my legs! It takes up almost all of my thighs! \u00a0It\u2019s not a tiny piece of wood.<\/p>\n

Next I drew out the circles, also double lined, and the flowery star wheel thingy in the middle (does that have a name?). \u00a0It is not perfect, of course, as I said, I am not an artist, \u00a0Then I carved it all out. \u00a0As well, as you can see, I carved out Hekates name in Greek.<\/p>\n

Now, with the left over mess from the cork, along with some random scratches in the wood, it obviously couldn\u2019t be left at just that. \u00a0Which is unfortunate, as I think it could have been perfect as it was, if the wood had been clean beforehand.<\/p>\n

Ah well. \u00a0Paint it is then. \u00a0I was going to use red for the design, with a black background \u2013 but my red paint just didn\u2019t cut it. \u00a0So I opted for silver instead.<\/p>\n

I only painted the inside circle of the wood, leaving the outer rim in its old red tone. \u00a0I think it works nicely. \u00a0A deep red border, black inside and silver strophalos and name.<\/p>\n

As I have already mentioned it is quite large, so it\u2019s probably going to be a wall plaque. \u00a0But for now it is sitting on my altar \u2013 I will add a hook to the back for hanging it up another day.<\/p>\n

And there we have it. \u00a0My own crafted strophalos wall plaque. \u00a0I haven\u2019t worked on the leftover tile \u2013 which is intact \u2013 yet. \u00a0It obviously will just be painted, but for now I am unsure if I want to make another strophalos, this time an altar tile, or a pentagram or something else.<\/p>\n

You don\u2019t always have to spend a lot of money to get your altar decked out. \u00a0Sometimes a little bit of work, and it wasn\u2019t even hard work, goes a long way. \u00a0$2 for a piece of wood and then use some of my kids craft paints, and I have what I need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n
