I\u2019ve venture a guess that most cat owners don\u2019t leash up their kitties and take them out for a walk in the neighborhood. Not that it can\u2019t be done. But as a man in Boulder, CO found out this week, if the cat doesn\u2019t want <\/em>to go for a walk, you\u2019d better take him home.<\/p>\n

According to DailyCamera.com,<\/a>19-year-old Seth Franco, of Lafayette, CO, went out for a jog in Waneka Lake Park and took his cat with him. When the\u00a0cat either couldn\u2019t or wouldn\u2019t complete the run, Franco allegedly tethered the kitty to a rock and kept jogging.<\/p>\n

A passerby saw the cat tied to the rock \u2013\u00a0and being attacked by birds \u2013 and called the police. When\u00a0Lafayette police Sgt. Fred Palmer arrived, Franco was just retrieving his kitty cat.\u00a0Sgt. Palmer\u00a0ticketed\u00a0Franco for suspicion of \u201cdomestic animal cruel treatment,\u201d which is a municipal offense.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The kitty was unharmed, but probably not very happy.<\/p>\n

Believe it or not, walking a cat on a leash isn\u2019t as crazy as it might sound. In a piece in the New York Times,<\/em> Stephanie Clifford writes about training her cat Mac to walk on a leash,<\/a> after letting him run loose in her Brooklyn neighborhood proved too dangerous for him (and the neighborhood birds).<\/p>\n

She turned to cat behaviorist Jackson Galaxy, host of Animal Planet\u2019s \u201cMy Cat From Hell.\u201d <\/a>And with some patience and lots of positive reinforcement, Mac\u00a0is now\u00a0able to go on outings to the park with Clifford, affording him some fresh air and safe exercise. (And for his owner,\u00a0lots of material for columns, I would imagine.)<\/p>\n

YouTube is loaded with videos demonstrating how to walk a cat on a leash; YouTube is also<\/em> loaded with videos on how to walk a dog on a leash, but there are trainers on there\u00a0whom I would not let within 100 miles of my dog. Since\u00a0 I don\u2019t know anything about cats, I can\u2019t recommend one video in particular. But if you\u2019re interested in walking your cat, I would suggest that you find a\u00a0trainer knowledgeable about\u00a0cat behavior and positive reinforcement training techniques.<\/p>\n
