One looks over the edge of the nest; is he thinking about flying? Underneath the top bird, the last egg is hidden. Will it hatch?<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>But the three babies who are here are growing by leaps and bounds! They\u2019re holding their heads up\u00a0with beaks open in anticipation of breakfast. Their feathers are starting to come in. Just a few days ago they looked like science projects, and today they\u2019re starting to look like\u00a0actual birds.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1771\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1771\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/97\/2014\/05\/glass-rock-robin-egg-babies-pansies-026.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1771\" title=\"glass rock robin egg babies pansies 026\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/97\/2014\/05\/glass-rock-robin-egg-babies-pansies-026-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1771\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Just a few days ago, the nestlings looked like prehistoric creatures. Now their feathers are starting to grow and the look more like baby birds.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1770\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1770\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/97\/2014\/05\/glass-rock-robin-egg-babies-pansies-025.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1770\" title=\"glass rock robin egg babies pansies 025\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/97\/2014\/05\/glass-rock-robin-egg-babies-pansies-025-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1770\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Their scrawny, naked bodies are starting to sprout downy feathers.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I\u2019m fascinated watching Mrs. Robin care for her babies, especially as they grow. When they were just eggs, she was less frantic. As the days go by, though, she\u00a0seems more nervous.<\/p>\n<p>She sees me come outside with the camera, and she gives me a good scolding, even if I just sit across the yard and try to catch a photo with the zoom. When I\u2019m in the garage attic, just a pane of glass between me and her babies, she lets me get one or two photos and then she starts squawking at me, flying by and hovering.\u00a0If I step back into the shadows, waiting for a photo of her with the babies, she sits on the edge of nest and stares into the darkness of the attic, waiting for me to make even the slightest move. Then I get another scolding. It\u2019s only when she sees me leave the garage through the door under her nest that she settles back in.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1772\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1772\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/97\/2014\/05\/Robin-eggs-019.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1772\" title=\"Robin eggs 019\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/97\/2014\/05\/Robin-eggs-019-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1772\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">One of the babies reaches up for whatever Mrs. Robin brought home for dinner.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I\u2019m trying hard not to disturb her; she has to leave the nest so I try and sneak a photo when she\u2019s already gone. But it\u2019s clear that even if she\u2019s out worm hunting she\u2019s got one eye on her nest.\u00a0 Fortunately, she seems to have settled on a truce with me: She flies away and waits in a nearby tree so I can go into the garage, take a photo, and then leave.
