Understanding Islam in America and what it means for Christians August 23, 2018

The dual purpose of “What Every Christian Needs to Know About Islam,” published by Xulon Press, is a call to engage in public policy and political action as informed citizens, and as Christians to share the gospel. The first in a series about Islam, Christianity, and politics in America, it begins by outlining the problem in America within the Christian community and civil society.

Unfortunately, Evangelicals are making false claims about Islam, encouraging the building of mosques, and erroneously arguing that Islam is protected by the First Amendment. Christian denominations invite imams to pray to Allah, pastors read the Qur’an from the pulpit, and seminaries are spearheading faith-based conferences purporting that Muslims and Christians share similar beliefs.

Teaching Islam in public school K-12 Common Core curriculum is a requirement. Children, and their parents, are prohibited from opting out, and taxpayers are funding public school field trips to mosques and Islamic centers, using multiple classrooms for Islamic prayers on Friday afternoons, and teaching children how to pray towards Mecca.

Islamic practices have become part of U.S. banking, judicial, and political systems. Concerted efforts are being advanced to make state constitutions Shari’a-compliant, to ensure “parental rights” laws enable child marriage, and that rather than city councils or state judicial systems, Shari’a Councils establish local laws.

Through several federal agencies and federally funded programs taxpayers paid to import at least 9 million Muslims under the Obama administration. Most were not vetted prior to entry, after arrival they received free healthcare, free short-term housing, food, and a range of other benefits not afforded to U.S. citizens. The majority of Muslim women and girls are in arranged marriages, which is only one of many reasons why Islamic groups are pushing for Shari’a Councils and Shari’a compliant state laws.

These problems are outlined in more detail in the second book of the series, because the first book is a call to action to Christians in America. The Qur’an is the only “religious” book that acknowledges Jesus as a historical person without sin. It devotes an entire chapter to Mary, the mother of Jesus. While it refers to many Old Testament events, the Qur’an is the basis for Islamic law. Rather, it is the law. It regulates diet, lifestyle, finance, and marriage, which includes wife beating and slavery. As U.S. citizens the basis for American law is the U.S. Constitution, which ensures liberty and freedoms, which the Qur’an diametrically opposes.

This book contrasts and compares not only the false teachings promoted by self-described Christians with the Bible, but also compares the teachings of the Qur’an and the Bible, the lives and work of Jesus and Muhammad, and offers readers questions to consider for apologetics, personal reflection and prayer.

One pastor told me that this book is a great resource for missionaries reaching the Muslim world; another that the subject is too controversial. Someone else, that, “these people are trying to kill us!” And, “not everyone is called to be a Jonah.”

But unlike Jonah we do not have to go far to reach Nineveh. It, and secular Babylon, is already in our schools, banking, judicial, and political systems, whether we like it or not. As citizens and Christians we have a responsibility to correct error and speak the truth in love. The book concludes by explaining that the solution is also in America—among Christians acting for the good of their community, to glorify God.

Action, through voting, running for local offices, school boards, community organization leadership roles, and other opportunities, is an essential Christian responsibility. As is speaking the truth and correcting error. Christians in America too often take for granted the privileges afforded to us, which for most who act or promote freedom or righteousness in other parts of the world do so at the risk of losing their lives.
