<\/iframe> \nIn a recent <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/news\/darren-aronofsky-paramount-spar-noah-648777\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Hollywood Reporter article, <\/a>Christian film consultant Mark Joseph commented on the controversy surrounding Darren Aronofsky\u2019s upcoming film <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt1959490\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Noah<\/a>, saying,<\/p>\n<blockquote>The director is there to serve the studio and the audience, not veer off into directions that go against the core audience\u2019s beliefs \u2014 at least if the goal is to get them to come to the theater.<\/p><\/blockquote>\nIn other words, according to Joseph, the director\u2019s job is to create propaganda\u2013and money\u2013not art.<\/p>\nMy two-word response: bull-sh*t.<\/p>\nSince when is art supposed to affirm an audience\u2019s core beliefs? To me, that\u2019s not art; it\u2019s propaganda. Great art always challenges our core beliefs. It provides us with a new way of looking at the world. That\u2019s exactly how I would describe Aronofsky\u2019s body of work up to this point. So the fact <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt1959490\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Noah<\/a> rankles those who consider themselves \u201cthe keepers of the Book\u201d should come as no surprise.<\/p>\nFurthermore, art is about interpretation, not representation. Case in point: Mel Gibson\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/boxofficemojo.com\/movies\/?id=passionofthechrist.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">The Passion of the Christ.<\/a> Aronofsky\u2019s job as an artist is to be faithful to his vision (and, to be fair, his initial agreement with the studio) not some evangelical\u2019s particular literal interpretation of the Bible. And say what you like about <a href=\"http:\/\/boxofficemojo.com\/movies\/?id=passionofthechrist.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">The Passion, <\/a>Gibson\u2019s film proved an artist can be both iconoclastic and <a href=\"http:\/\/boxofficemojo.com\/movies\/?id=passionofthechrist.htm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">profitable<\/a>.<\/p>\nUnlike Mark Joseph, I can\u2019t wait to see Noah, precisely because I suspect it\u2019s going to show me the character of Noah and the story of the Flood in a way I\u2019ve never imagined before.<\/p>\nAnd for Aronofsky\u2019s sake, I hope I\u2019m not alone.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"In a recent Hollywood Reporter
