I chose chapters based on their relevance to our homeschool life. \u00a0It was hard to pick, and there are not enough days in a week to cover all of our issues and diagnoses. \u00a0So I decided to give equal opportunity to both boys and both parents, with each of us getting a day.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Tuesday: Anxiety (chapter 4)<\/li>\n<li>Wednesday: Attention Deficit (chapter 6)<\/li>\n<li>Thursday: Hormonal Changes (chapter 8)<\/li>\n<li>Friday: Aging (chapter 9)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I leave it to you to figure out which of us would benefit most from the effects of exercise on each.<\/p>\n<p>Before we start, though, I thought I would reprint something from an earlier post, to help you get up to speed. \u00a0Those first posts focused on the role of exercise in learning. \u00a0From last December:<\/p>\n<p><em>Remember all of the executive functions that I wrote about in Ellen Galinsky\u2019s excellent book\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/homeschool-chronicles.com\/?p=66\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Mind in the Making<\/a>? \u00a0She had some great ideas on how to improve them. \u00a0And just reading about how important those functions are reoriented my homeschool priorities. \u00a0But what I hadn\u2019t heard until I read\u00a0Spark was how important exercise is for improving all of those functions.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>So how does it work? \u00a0Exercise improves learning by:<\/em><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><em>Increasing the production of neurotransmitters that improve alertness, attention, and motivation.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Preparing and pumping nerve cells to bind to one another (this is essentially what learning is, building connections between nerve cells).<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Spurring the development of new nerve cells from the stem cells in the hippocampus.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><em>In other words, the brain is plastic \u2014 it can grow or diminish, work more or less effectively \u2014 and exercise helps it to grow and work better.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/homeschool-chronicles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/Unknown-17.jpeg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-430\" src=\"https:\/\/homeschool-chronicles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/Unknown-17.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"219\" height=\"216\"><\/a>So there it is: I\u2019m all Sparked up again. \u00a0Won\u2019t you join me?<\/p>\n<p>C\u2019mon, people. \u00a0Put on your best Peaches and Herb voice and sing along:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>Reignited, and it feels so good.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I long ago promised to continue my review of Spark: The Revolutionary New Science of Exercise and the Brain.
