{"id":782,"date":"2011-08-13T03:22:43","date_gmt":"2011-08-13T03:22:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/homeschool-chronicles.com\/?p=782"},"modified":"2011-08-13T03:22:43","modified_gmt":"2011-08-13T03:22:43","slug":"perhaps","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/homeschoolchronicles\/2011\/08\/perhaps\/","title":{"rendered":"Perhaps"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p><a href=\"https:\/\/homeschool-chronicles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/20mini.600.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-783\" src=\"https:\/\/homeschool-chronicles.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/20mini.600-300x163.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"163\"><\/a>I\u2019m too tired tonight to write a coherent blog. \u00a0Instead, I\u2019ll post random thoughts on our week at Toah Nipi:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Sand (or dirt) is perhaps the most important play experience of childhood. \u00a0My boys have spent many joyful hours playing in the dirt with children in a squatters village in Mexico. \u00a0No one spoke the same language, but everyone knew what to do with dirt and water and sticks: make moats and rivers and fortresses. \u00a0This week, they built a castle and a river and a moat and a habitat for salamanders. \u00a0(The salamanders seemed to prefer the lake, though, and kept trying to get out of the \u201chabitat\u201d built just for them.)<\/li>\n<li>Kids like hiking. \u00a0I\u2019ve not met a kid under ten who doesn\u2019t like to walk in the woods and climb rocks and reach the top of a mountain. \u00a0No complaining or fighting or whining. \u00a0Hiking is perhaps the best family activity ever.<\/li>\n<li>I am married to a good man. \u00a0On our way out of the camp yesterday, the woman who does the majority of the housekeeping there said to me, \u201cYou know you don\u2019t have to clean the rooms, right? \u00a0It\u2019s your vacation.\u201d \u00a0When I told her that Jeff likes to pick up before we go, she said, \u201cI know. \u00a0I always tell the staff that if Jeff was here, you don\u2019t need to clean. He\u2019s the only one who leaves the place in better shape than when he got here.\u201d \u00a0That\u2019s a pretty good rule for life, yes?<\/li>\n<li>Picking blueberries is relaxing. \u00a0We picked twelve pounds in the morning, and the boys liked it so much we went back to get twelve more pounds in the afternoon. \u00a0Cleaning and freezing twenty-four pounds of blueberries is the opposite of relaxing.<\/li>\n<li>Canning is fun. \u00a0This has nothing to do with Toah Nipi or the boys. \u00a0But my friend Beth came to town today, and whenever she is here, we cook. \u00a0Today we made tomato jam from a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2008\/08\/20\/dining\/201mrex.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Mark Bitman recipe.<\/a> \u00a0It is, perhaps, the best condiment I have ever tasted.<\/li>\n<li>Playing cards is one of my favorite activities in the world. \u00a0I can\u2019t wait for the kids to get old enough to play with us. \u00a0Of course, that will take away from one of my other favorite activities \u2013 staying up late playing cards with Debbie and Tom while the kids are in bed.<\/li>\n<li>We\u2019re back home, and it feels good. \u00a0I love Toah Nipi, but I love home even more. \u00a0The boys may think that Toah Nipi is the best place on Earth, but I\u2019m sure that for me that place is home.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: 16px;color: #444444;font-family: Georgia, 'Bitstream Charter', serif;line-height: 24px\">I went on vacation to Alaska with my friends Rob and Shannah. \u00a0I must have been overdoing it with the superlatives, and after a week, when Shannah could no longer take it, she lamented, \u201cIf I had a dime for every time you thought something was AMAZING, I would be rich.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>I know what she means. \u00a0Superlatives are like exclamation points. \u00a0If you need them, there\u2019s probably a problem with your writing (or speaking). \u00a0But sometimes a week is just that good \u2013 perhaps one of the best.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I\u2019m too tired tonight to write a coherent blog. \u00a0Instead, I\u2019ll post random thoughts on our week at Toah Nipi: Sand (or dirt) is perhaps the most important play experience of childhood. \u00a0My boys have spent many joyful hours playing in the dirt with children in a squatters village in Mexico. \u00a0No one spoke the [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":190,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-782","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uncategorized"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v21.1 -
