I know, I  know, it’s been almost 2 weeks since I’ve written anything. Nearly a week since I’ve had any real exercise. Several days since I spent any real time in prayerful meditation. But I am being faithful in at least one discipline this Lenten season–no fast food!  Since breakfast is the hardest time of day for me to ‘just say no’ to the drive thru, i’m doing an installation of The English Major Diet, reminding myself that the best breakfast... Read more

While perusing a Pottery Barn catalogue the other day, i came across this picture. Now, i will admit, for all that i think the Pottery Barn embodies all-that-is-wrong-with-America, a not-so-small part of my brain went “OOOooooo, pretty!” But an even larger part of my brain sort of lauged out loud…this is supposed to be a CLOSET y’all. Not only is it bigger (and way fancier) than my whole bedroom, but really…whose stuff looks like that? Where are the gym clothes... Read more

I may talk a big game about simple, fresh and local in my English Major Diet posts. But you know, I am a sucker for McDonald’s breakfast. Really, it’s their coffee that keeps me coming back to the drive-thru. I hate Starbucks (unless it’s for a froo-froo-espresso drink) and it seems like all the smaller and independent coffee places are trying to mimic their motor-oil morning brew. So, for all that I’ve never been much on fast-food, I stop at McDonald’s for coffee, and... Read more

Like many of you, I have mixed feelings about Valentine’s Day. I’m all for telling our loved ones that they are…well, loved. But needing a special day to do it is kind of like needing New Year’s to make a resolution. Mostly, the whole day is a commercialized fiasco that wastes a bunch of paper, feeds kids too much sugar, and makes single people feel like they are missing something. All the while, real and lasting love dissolves into Hallmark... Read more

Continuing with my English Major Diet, wherein the narrative matters as much as the food… Like i was saying yesterday, hard to believe that i had 2 of the best meals ever on the same day, but travel is like that sometimes. Of course, travel food is hit or miss. It can be the best thing ever, or it can be a string of bad chains that stretches all across the country. It was day 3 of our drive/move from... Read more

Ok, so we start. Read back a day if you want to know why i’m recounting the best meals i ever ate. Basically, I figure that reflecting on the divine dining experience will keep me from eating crap like, you know, cheeseburgers. So why am i starting my ‘best meals ever’ series with a cheeseburger? Stay with me. I have been a Route 66 nerd for however long…a long time. When i graduated from seminary my sweet (then new-ish) husband... Read more

Alright, y’all. It is ON. As I’ve mentioned before, the breastfeeding diet was good to me for nearly 2 years of my life, (though they were not consecutive years) meaning I ate whatever I wanted and still lost the baby weight. And then lost a little extra. The pregnancy diet–also a considerable portion of the last few years of my life–was also good to me. I ate lots of friut, I watched my sodium and processed food intake…but i did enjoy a few (dozen)... Read more

I don’t understand much about phishing scams, or how the low-lives who run them turn a profit, or why the whole scene is named after a pretty great band. But I do know that my officeLive account has been vulnerable to attacks on numerous occasion, and every time it happens, i get more and more junk. I also know that i can mark something as ‘junk mail,’ and it still finds a way to creep into my inbox. The ‘senders’... Read more

I’m almost a week late in getting to this post, but it must be said: The Grey’s Anatomy “What if?” episode was brilliant. It was not just a surface level glance at the vagaries of fate–this was an in-depth look at the many layers of our connections, our journeys, and the seemingly small decisions that affect not just our own lives, but profoundly shape the lives of those around us. Was it as fun to watch as the Friends  similar journey... Read more
