Absolutely not.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, some people have that impression. They seem to think that judgment is a legal idea and so unrelated to honor and shame. In this post, I\u2019ll show you a number of passages that illustrate how the Bible describes judgment via honor-shame.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6143\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6143\" style=\"width: 265px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/576\/2015\/10\/such-shame.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-6143\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/576\/2015\/10\/such-shame.jpg?w=560\" alt=\"\" width=\"265\" height=\"398\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6143\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Flickr\/Royalconstantinesociety<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>The Shame of Judgment<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Everything a person can say about judgment from a traditional perspective can be communicated by using honor-shame.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel 12:2 is quite direct:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">And many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and <strong><em>some to shame and everlasting contempt<\/em><\/strong>.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Likewise, Daniel 9:8 adds,<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">To us, O Lord, belongs open shame, to our kings, to our princes, and to our fathers, because we have sinned against you.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The psalmist pleads for God to judge his enemies. It is especially interesting to observe the purpose for God\u2019s judgment.\u00a0Psalm 83:16\u201318 says,<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Fill their faces with shame, <strong><em>that they may seek your name<\/em><\/strong>, O LORD. Let them be put to shame and dismayed forever; let them perish in disgrace, <strong><em>that they may know that you alone<\/em><\/strong>, whose name is the LORD, are the Most High over all the earth.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>God gets glory when he puts his enemies to shame (cf. Exod 7:4\u20135;\u00a0Ezek 32:9\u201315)<\/p>\n<p>Biblically speaking, \u201cjudgment\u201d referred to more than the punishment of bad people. It routinely speaks about how God sets a situation right and rescues His people. We see this two-fold emphasis in Psalm 75:7, which says:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2026it is God who executes judgment, <em>putting down one and lifting up another<\/em>.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Through judgment, God honors one side and shames another.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">Saved from what?<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6140\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6140\" style=\"width: 210px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/576\/2015\/05\/3251428624_80eec993d7_o.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-6140\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/576\/2015\/05\/3251428624_80eec993d7_o.jpg\" alt=\"3251428624_80eec993d7_o\" width=\"210\" height=\"311\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6140\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image by Marc-Andre Lariviere by CC<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Consider how the Scripture describes salvation. Biblical writers announce that God\u2019s people will be saved from shame.\u00a0In Zeph 3:11, we read<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">On that day you shall not be put to shame because of the deeds by which you have rebelled against me; for then I will remove from your midst your proudly exultant ones, and you shall no longer be haughty in my holy mountain.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In Romans 10:11 (and in Rom 9:33), Paul draws from Isa 28:16 saying, \u201c<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame<\/span>\u201d (cf. Rom 5:5).<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">The Shame of Death<\/h2>\n<p>What about passages like Rom 6:23, which say that the \u201cwages of sin is death\u201d?<\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Death is the ultimate shame.<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Death exposes our vulnerabilities, our weakness and limitation. We are not sovereign over ourselves. None but Jesus are able to resurrect ourselves.<\/p>\n<p>Consider Jeremiah 51:47\u201351. Notice how death and destruction are described in terms of shame.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Therefore, behold, the days are coming\u00a0when I will punish the images of Babylon;\u00a0<strong><em>her whole land shall be put to shame,\u00a0and all her slain shall fall in the midst of her<\/em><\/strong>. Then the heavens and the earth,\u00a0and all that is in them, shall sing for joy over Babylon,\u00a0for the destroyers shall come against them out of the north,\u00a0declares the Lord.Babylon must fall for the slain of Israel,\u00a0just as for Babylon have fallen the slain of all the earth. \u201cYou who have escaped from the sword,\u00a0go, do not stand still!\u00a0Remember the Lord from far away,\u00a0and let Jerusalem come into your mind:\u00a0\u201c<strong><em>We are put to shame, for we have heard reproach;\u00a0dishonor has covered our face<\/em><\/strong>,\u00a0for foreigners have come\u00a0into the holy places of the Lord\u2019s house.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/0Swc9K6VtL8\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">No one want to \u201close face.\u201d<\/a>\u00a0The fear of shame drives people\u2019s behavior as does the desire for honor.
