If you want to know why the angry, one can simply observe how Westerners shame Muslims.<\/p>\n<p>Be aware that we can shame other people, even without knowing it.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h1 class=\"pg-headline\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">How Westerners Shame Muslims<\/span><\/h1>\n<p>I\u2019ve linked a number of recent articles pointing out the same phenomenon. I don\u2019t see any world leaders flying to Istanbul to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2015\/01\/11\/world\/charlie-hebdo-paris-march\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">march in public protests against extremism<\/a>, after all, even though there\u2019s been more violence from terrorists in Turkey than many other countries.<\/p>\n<p>Some Muslims think this double standard is a clear instance of Islamophobia.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/entry\/we-prayed-for-paris-but-what-about-istanbul_us_57741c57e4b042fba1ceeec2\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">We Prayed For Paris \u2014 But What About Istanbul? <\/a>(Huffington Post, June 29, 2016)<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWhile Facebook turned on its safety check feature, which allows users to mark themselves as safe during a crisis, it did not provide a filter that lets users easily modify their profile picture with an overlay of the Turkish flag, as they did with the French flag after the Paris attacks.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h1 class=\"pg-headline\" style=\"text-align: left; padding-left: 60px;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Apathy Shames<\/span><\/h1>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8554\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8554\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/576\/2016\/07\/6025d027d98f43fcfe4601e6c2ca6506_XL.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-8554\" class=\" decorated-link\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-8554 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/576\/2016\/07\/6025d027d98f43fcfe4601e6c2ca6506_XL-300x170.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"170\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8554\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Credit: creative commons<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Apathy breeds anger because apathy reckons <em>people as having little value<\/em>, which is the essence of shaming. It is very natural that Westerners would be empathetic towards those they regard as cultural \u201cinsiders\u201d (e.g. Orlando, Europeans, etc.). So, the injured &amp; dead (among the insiders) are memorialized (i.e. honored).<\/p>\n<p>Over time, this pattern of shaming behavior fosters deep seeded anger even hatred towards the West. Someone might reply, \u201cI just didn\u2019t think about it.\u201d That is precisely the point.<\/p>\n<p>Shame comes in many forms. It is a practical issue that shapes everything from personal relationships to politics. Of course, Christians should be conscious of honor-shame dynamics in their own community. We don\u2019t want to settle for what it merely \u201cnatural\u201d (only honoring cultural insiders).<\/p>\n<p>I leave you with a few questions for reflection:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>How might apathetic shaming be a factor in your ministry?<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><em>How might we honor cultural outsiders in order to reflect the fact we want all nations to be \u201cinsiders\u201d with respect to God\u2019s family?<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>People wonder why the rest of the world gets angry at Western countries.
