This falls in the category of, \u201ccurious about readers\u2019 opinions\u201d \u2014 or, really, curious about the opinions of people who think about this sort of thing, whether readers or not, but you take what you can get.<\/p>\n

There has been a fair amount of uproar, among people who tend to get into an uproar about these sorts of things, about the fact that, of all the \u201cbest acting\u201d Academy Award categories, not one nominee was a Person of Color. \u00a0Now, I have to admit that I have not seen any of these movies \u2014 we saw Unbroken not long ago, and my husband wants to see American Sniper (side question: \u00a0should I?), but nothing on this list<\/a> at all. \u00a0(And, yes, I did check on the nominees to determine that they were, in fact, all of largely, or entirely, European descent.)<\/div>\n

And, of couse, Al Sharpton called an \u201cemergency meeting\u201d<\/a> \u2014 though only of his own \u201ctask force.\u201d<\/div>\n

So this is really a two-part question:<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
First, of all, were there nonwhite actors or actresses whose performances should have been recognized as a nominee? \u00a0Were any of the performances in, say, Selma, top notch? \u00a0One does have the impression that the \u201cserious\u201d films tend to star black actors only if it\u2019s \u201cblack-themed,\u201d e.g., about the Civil Rights Movement, or slavery, or urban poverty, but that your typical Mental Illness Tragedy wouldn\u2019t.<\/div>\n

But, secondly \u2014 here\u2019s where the hypothetical comes in: \u00a0imagine that the Oscar acting categories weren\u2019t differentiated by sex. \u00a0For those of you who do see movies and appreciate the nuances of performance, by and large, which sex would be more represented?<\/div>\n
UPDATE:\n

What if the Academy Awards moved from male\/female to \u201cbest performance in a drama\u201d vs. \u201cbest performance in an an action film or comedy\u201d? \u00a0I suppose the line between \u201caction\u201d and \u201cdrama\u201d isn\u2019t always clear, but you know what I mean: Guardians of the Galaxy vs. Selma.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
