For the time being, this post is more of a placeholder, until I summarize the book more fully. \u00a0But this is a rare book that I actually own, having bought it off Amazon after reading a reference to it somewhere. \u00a0It was published in 2009, but the data is still relevant.<\/p>\n

You\u2019ve read various charts on how much the U.S. spends on education (e.g., Megan McArdle\u2019s post <\/a>the other day), comparing this to other countries, which spend as much or more, to refute the premise that the solution to poor school performance is simply to spend more, more, more \u2014 on reduced class sizes, on higher teacher salaries, on more technology in the classroom, on newer buildings, etc. \u00a0McArdle even includes a graphic which shows that the much-vaunted Finnish system spends less, per student, PPP-adjusted, than the U.S. does.<\/p>\n

(Hmm. . . seems to me I wrote about this before. \u00a0Oh, yeah \u2014 here it is: \u00a0\u201cOn Government Healthcare Spending \u2014 and Education<\/a>.\u201d \u00a0But I only provided a table \u2014 plus link to the OECD \u2014 and a snippet of comment.)<\/p>\n

Anyway, this book is exceptional for, in a very data-heavy way, focusing on court decisions that required certain cities and states to massively fund their schools, based on very aggressive readings of state constitution, such as the \u201cAbbott\u201d case, and another in Wyoming and in Kansas City. \u00a0What was the outcome? \u00a0Nada. \u00a0Zilch. \u00a0The mind-blowing sums of money did not have an impact. <\/p>\n

Anyway \u2014 I\u2019ll try later to quantify this assertion based on the data in this book. \u00a0But it\u2019s pretty important stuff, whenever anyone says \u201cwe don\u2019t spend enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
