Of course we\u2019ve got to talk about the now-infamous \u201cJames Taylor sings \u2018You\u2019ve Got a Friend\u2019 to the French\u201d clip.<\/p>\n

<\/iframe> \nNote that I haven\u2019t seen this.<\/p>\nI\u2019m taking a break at work (remember: \u00a0I work at home, part-time, I don\u2019t claim this as work-time), so I can link to the video, but I haven\u2019t actually seen it, just read reporting on it, such as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/2015-01-15\/kerry-going-to-paris-to-give-france-a-big-hug-after-attacks.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">this item from Bloomberg<\/a>, or, in the blogosphere, <a href=\"http:\/\/althouse.blogspot.com\/2015\/01\/its-really-painful-to-wince-for-3-and.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">this piece from Ann Althouse<\/a>.<\/p>\nBut, look: \u00a0I hate to rain on your parade, but this is not the dumbest action in the annals of Smart Diplomacy (that was the reset button) or even the dumbest thing in the news today (that\u2019s the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.althouse.blogspot.com\/2015\/01\/the-menopause-of-monologues.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Mount Hoyloke cancellation of The Vagina Monologues <\/a>because it didn\u2019t include women without vaginas.) \u00a0According to Bloomberg, Taylor was in Paris anyway, so it\u2019s not as if the US imported him as a prop. \u00a0And the bigger question is not, does Kerry look like a fool in Americans\u2019 eyes, but what do the French think?<\/p>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.lefigaro.fr\/politique\/2015\/01\/16\/01002-20150116ARTFIG00284-l-emouvante-surprise-de-john-kerry-aux-parisiens.php\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Le Figaro says<\/a>,<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"tr_bq\">Le chef de la diplomatie am\u00e9ricaine a cr\u00e9\u00e9 la surprise en invitant le chanteur James Taylor \u00e0 interpr\u00e9ter sur sc\u00e8ne l\u2019un de ses grands succ\u00e8s You\u2019ve got a friend, alors qu\u2019Anne Hidalgo lui tenait le micro. Un moment de grande \u00e9motion apr\u00e8s une longue intervention de John Kerry durant laquelle il a notamment \u00e9voqu\u00e9 l\u2019amiti\u00e9 entre la France et les \u00c9tats-Unis, rendu hommage aux victimes, fustig\u00e9 les assassins et salu\u00e9 le courage de ceux qui ont affront\u00e9 ces \u00e9v\u00e9nements en sauvant des vies.<\/p><\/blockquote>\nMy rusty French tells me that key phrase is that this was a \u201cmoment of grand emotion\u201d after Kerry\u2019s speech invoking the friendship between the two countries, paying homage to the victims, criticized the attackers (I presume the connotation is harsher in French than just \u201ccriticize\u201d), and saluting the courage of those who saved lives.<\/p>\nNow, this was the first paper that came to mind, so I tried to look around some more. \u00a0Maybe Le Figaro is too pro-Obama. \u00a0Le Monde has an article <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lemonde.fr\/societe\/article\/2015\/01\/16\/john-kerry-a-paris-nous-partageons-la-douleur-du-peuple-francais_4557511_3224.html#\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">on the Kerry visit<\/a> but makes no mention of James Taylor. \u00a0Maybe they went to press too soon? \u00a0But a search on google.fr turned up nothing either; plenty of articles on John Kerry, but as soon as I add \u201cJames Taylor\u201d to the search, I get nothing \u2014 or, rather, I only get results from American news sources. \u00a0Again, this is from google.fr, and as soon as I take the James Taylor out again, it\u2019s back to French results. <\/p>\nWhich means the French news outlets aren\u2019t reporting on it. \u00a0Possibly it was so cringe-worthy that they were embarrassed; or, more likely, it was a non-event, in their eyes, in the wider context.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Of course we\u2019ve got to talk about the now-infamous \u201cJames Taylor sings \u2018You\u2019ve Got a Friend\u2019 to the French\u201d clip.
