{"id":10716,"date":"2018-08-21T21:07:15","date_gmt":"2018-08-22T03:07:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/admin.patheos.com\/blogs\/janetheactuary\/?p=10716"},"modified":"2018-08-21T21:07:15","modified_gmt":"2018-08-22T03:07:15","slug":"private-spaces-on-the-internet","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/janetheactuary\/2018\/08\/private-spaces-on-the-internet.html","title":{"rendered":"Private spaces on the internet?"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-5817\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/533\/2017\/01\/hacking-1685092_1920-1024x767.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"767\"><\/p>\n<p>Two items:<\/p>\n<p>First, have you read about the batty redefinitions of genitals?<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/lgbtqia-safe-sex-guide\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">LGBTQIA Safer Sex Guide<\/a>, as available at Healthline.com, and received tons of publicity in the past, say, 24 hours.\u00a0 I won\u2019t tell you how they\u2019ve renamed basic human body parts, but you can click the link if you like.\u00a0 The site has now put out a clarification, titled, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/lgbtqia-safe-sex-guide\/response#1\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">We\u2019re Not Renaming the Vagina<\/a>,\u201d in which they say that the alternate term used was intended\u00a0 \u201cspecifically for certain members of the trans community who identify with it\u201d because the document itself was \u201ccreated for a specific audience\u201d \u2014 that is, despite the label of \u201cLGBTQIA-inclusive\u201d, the document is really specifically for the TQIA demographic.<\/p>\n<p>Further, they say,<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>This usage is meant for one-on-one communication with trusted persons, such as your doctor or partner, not for broad discussion.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Similarly, in a <a href=\"https:\/\/assets2.hrc.org\/files\/assets\/resources\/Trans_Safer_Sex_Guide_FINAL.pdf?_ga=2.162811380.910185904.1534872273-1928237950.1534872273\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">document put out by the Human Rights Campaign<\/a>, the author says,<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>We, as trans people, use a variety of words to describe our gender and our body parts, and these words can be very unique and personal. There\u2019s no one right way to refer to our bodies, but to keep things consistent in this guide, we\u2019ve decided to use the following words in the following ways.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>before providing definitions which, again, will make your jaw drop, definitions which are clearly inappropriate if activists tried to demand that they make their way into wider usage.<\/p>\n<p>But is that what they are doing?\u00a0 Or has the wider world simply stumbled onto what was meant to be a private conversation, a specific usage within a subculture who acknowledge that these aren\u2019t the \u201creal terms\u201d any more than, say, \u201cMr. Johnson\u201d might be \u2014 except, of course, that ordinarily one doesn\u2019t insist that subculture-specific terms <em>need<\/em> to be used in order to effectively provide healthcare.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe.\u00a0 I\u2019m not sure if it stops at this or if, as the placement of this guide as a tile directly on the front page suggests, there is an agenda of bringing these terms into the mainstream.\u00a0 I have done at least some looking at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hrc.org\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">HRC website<\/a> and their guide is not easy to find, which suggests it\u2019s not an action item.<\/p>\n<p>Item 2:\u00a0 the Sarah Jeong affair.\u00a0 Yes, it\u2019s forgotten about now, but earlier this month, Jeong was newly announced as a staff writer at the New York Times when conservative writers and twitter accounts revealed that from 2013 \u2013 2015 she had tweeted numerous anti-white tweets.\u00a0 (See my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/janetheactuary\/2018\/08\/i-which-i-think-about-sarah-jeong-racism-and-privacy.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">prior blog post<\/a>.)\u00a0 Her defenders said that this was all in response to hateful things being said to her, and, besides, among her social circle, it was understood that \u201chating white people\u201d really meant being upset at racism, not, y\u2019know, actually wanting to #cancelwhitepeople and so forth.<\/p>\n<p>So does she get a pass?\u00a0 Do we say, yes, her statements were out on the internet, but they were clearly not directed at any specific target, she wasn\u2019t \u201c@-ing\u201d anyone, so it\u2019s no big deal?<\/p>\n<p>But at the same time \u2014 well, with apologies for not pulling up specific examples, but you know that there have been instances where individuals have used offensive language in what they believed to be private conversations which were overheard or taped, and have lost jobs or been publicly shamed as a result.<\/p>\n<p>Oh, and item 3:\u00a0 Patheos.\u00a0 You know how it goes.\u00a0 I write something that, as a Catholic, I want to discuss with other Catholics.\u00a0 Atheists jump in and say, \u201cwell, the solution is to recognize that it\u2019s all pretend and there is no god, so you should walk away, decide for yourself what\u2019s right and wrong and let everyone else do likewise.\u201d\u00a0 And it\u2019s frustrating, because that conversation I had hoped to have is lost.\u00a0 I suppose one might say that I simply shouldn\u2019t have expected otherwise, and that it\u2019s a trade-off because Patheos gives me something more of an audience than if I were just one participant among many in the various \u201csafe-space\u201d Catholic discussion forums elsewhere online.\u00a0 And that\u2019s true and I don\u2019t block angry-atheist commenters \u2014 but it can still be irritating.<\/p>\n<p>So I offer this mostly as an item for discussion, rather than with an opinion that I want to push.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Image: \u00a0<span style=\"display: inline !important; float: none; background-color: transparent; color: #333333; cursor: text; font-family: Georgia,'Times New Roman','Bitstream Charter',Times,serif; font-size: 16px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: 400; letter-spacing: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: left; text-decoration: none; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; white-space: normal; word-spacing: 0px;\">from https:\/\/pixabay.com\/en\/hacking-hacker-computer-internet-1685092\/<\/span><\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Two items: First, have you read about the batty redefinitions of genitals?
