So there\u2019s a complaint floating out there that it\u2019s inappropriate of the media and politicians to refer to \u201cthe Prophet Mohammed\u201d because it implies an affirmation that he is, indeed, a prophet \u2014 where, at the same time, no secular journalist would use a label in reference to Jesus that implies any belief, e.g., it\u2019s \u201cJesus\u201d or maybe \u201cJesus of Nazareth\u201d but never \u201cJesus Christ\u201d or \u201cChrist Jesus\u201d or \u201cthe Lord Jesus Christ.\u201d<\/p>\n
Annoyingly, I can\u2019t find this any longer. \u00a0I thought this was somewhere on National Review<\/p>\n
But in thinking about this further, it seems to me that this isn\u2019t altogether than unreasonable, if it\u2019s treated as a title: \u00a0the Prophet Mohammed, the Reverend John Smith, or Father Bill. \u00a0Or: \u00a0as the equivalent to the practice, for Catholics, of bestowing the title \u201cSaint.\u201d <\/p>\n
Which led me to wonder \u2014 and to ask my readers: \u00a0what does the AP Stylebook counsel with respect to individuals who have been canonized as a saint:<\/p>\n
Is it Saint Paul, and Saint Patrick, and Saint Nicholas of Myra, when talking about these historical figures, or just Paul of Tarsus, Patrick the first bishop of Ireland, and Nicholas, bishop of Myra? <\/p>\n
And is it Saint John Paul II? \u00a0Or just Pope John Paul II?<\/p>\n
