Look, I\u2019m just spitballing here, as they say, and have utterly failed to keep up with my Egyptian current events, but I was taken by surprise by reports <\/a>that al-Sisi is positioning himself as The Elusive Moderate Muslim. \u00a0At the same time, Germans are protesting<\/a> non-assimilating Muslims, and complaining that refugees are living high on the hog while they\u2019re left high-and-dry. <\/p>\n

So here\u2019s my win-win proposal: \u00a0Germany outsources its refugees (or the refugees that it would have taken, in the future) to Egypt, paying them on a per-head basis. \u00a0Egypt gets a cash infusion, gets to demonstrate its Moderate Islamic Country bona fides, and, best-case, can attract business investment and even attract a certain number of educated, entrepreneurial refugees along with the desparate, poor ones.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s not to like?<\/p>\n

UPDATE:<\/p>\n

So, yeah, there\u2019s a difference between the sitcom-ese \u201ca plan so crazy it just might work\u201d and just plain crazy, but don\u2019t you just wish the world could be, well, different? \u00a0That those pictures people occasionally share on blogs and twitter feeds and news reports of the Muslim world back in the 50s or so, when women wore fashions in line with European styles, no headscarves, and participated in public life, were actually current photographs? \u00a0That the Arab Spring had produced a modern, democratic, and generally more sensible Middle East? <\/p>\n

Instead, we get an attack on a French magazine that had dared to poke fun at Islam. <\/p>\n

Is this \u201cterrorism\u201d? \u00a0Probably not \u2013 insofar as \u201cterrorism\u201d has generally tended to mean \u201can attack by a terrorist group,\u201d and this could just as easily be an attack by some angry unassimilated Muslim men from the \u201cinner city\u201d suburbs of Paris, unaffiliated with any larger group. \u00a0But it does raise the legitimacy of the Pegida protesters\u2019<\/a> concerns about Muslim immigrants who haven\u2019t assimilated into the countries which have opened themselves to them. <\/p>\n

It still remains to be seen what happens next in France \u2014 whether they crack down on Islamists in some form or another, or whether political correctness means being more concerned about avoiding a \u201cbacklash.\u201d \u00a0Certainly Twitter tells me that there\u2019s a mix of both concern and \u201cblaming the victim\u201d in the U.S., and various media outlets are careful, in their reporting, to blur out any of the \u201coffending\u201d images (any guesses on whether those same outlets blurred out Piss Christ?) \u2014 one example here<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 which, at this stage in the game, is immensely disturbing.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
