Kathy Tran, confirmed that it would enable a doctor, without any second opinion, to perform an abortion any time up until the child is born, upon a claim that doing so was necessary to preserve the mother\u2019s mental health.\u00a0 Virginia governor Ralph Northam confirmed his support, though with the claim that late-term\u00a0abortions were always for the most serious of reasons; however, a 2013 Guttmacher study reported that late-term abortions happen for many reasons beyond health crises or \u201cincompatible with life\u201d deformities, including everything from less-severe disabilities to later-pregnancy changes in circumstances like a relationship break-up, or simply due to not knowing about the pregnancy earlier.<\/p>\n

So when someone like Northam makes a statement like this, do they do so because they\u2019re simply uninformed?\u00a0 That\u2019s the benefit-of-the-doubt-iest\u00a0explanation.\u00a0 But I am having a hard time with this explanation when Northam goes so far as to say this is universally true.\u00a0 Even Planned Parenthood didn\u2019t make that claim but was snakier about it, saying late-term abortions \u201coften\u201d are due to serious health risks or severe fetal abnormalities:<\/p>\n
