My middle son\u2019s birthday is December 17th, and we (my husband and I) are the sort of people who don\u2019t do a lot of big Christmas things, so we tend to do our shopping at the last minute, that is, getting a start after the birthday celebration is done. \u00a0And today is the last day one can order off Amazon and still get free shipping! <\/p>\n

Youngest son: \u00a0age 7, second grade. \u00a0He likes Legos (though he has plenty already), art, and reading. \u00a0He\u2019s read the Magic Tree House series and is ready for something more difficult, but not yet ready for something as involved as Harry Potter, for instance.<\/p>\n

Middle son: \u00a0age 12, sixth grade. \u00a0He likes board games, chess, history (the Romans!) and kids\u2019 fantasy (e.g., Fablehaven, Percy Jackson). \u00a0He\u2019d be interested in some more serious construction\/STEM-type toy but I hesitate because I don\u2019t think he\u2019d stick with it. <\/p>\n

Oldest son: \u00a0age 14, ninth grade. \u00a0He\u2019s hardest to buy for. \u00a0He likes science, but he doesn\u2019t, again, have the follow-through for a complex sort of \u201ckit.\u201d \u00a0He likes music, especially what they play in Jazz Band at school. \u00a0And he likes going on campouts with the scouts. \u00a0(There\u2019s talk about outings specifically for the high school-aged scouts, but nothing\u2019s materialized yet.)<\/p>\n
