Fun little item in the paper the other day; actually it was an advertisement<\/a> in the local news section of the Chicago Tribune, which said, \u201cAfter 31 years of renting office space in downtown Chicago, the Heartland Institute<\/a> is moving to Arlington Heights in May.\u201d \u00a0 Moving, and hiring 10 new staff members \u201cwho are excellent writers and committed to free-market ideas.\u201d<\/p>\n

So I said, \u201chey, that\u2019s my neck of the woods!\u201d \u00a0and \u201chey, I\u2019m an excellent writer who believes in the free market! \u00a0This is it, my chance to make the move from actuary to policy analyst without needing to relocate.\u201d<\/p>\n

Now, they\u2019re moving to the north end of Arlington Heights, in an area heavy on low-rise office buildings, so it\u2019s not quite as perfect as if they were moving, say, to some of the vacant office space in the center of town. \u00a0Here\u2019s their description of their plan<\/a> \u2014 basically, it\u2019s the American dream: \u00a0for the same as they\u2019re paying in rent in downtown Chicago, they can purchase a space and pay it off, and end up with lower operating costs and an asset.<\/p>\n

And who is the Heartland Institute? \u00a0Well, that\u2019s the problem. \u00a0Their claim to fame seems to be climate-change denialism, and multiple left-wing sites announce that they\u2019re in the pocket of the Koch brothers. \u00a0Not that I would necessarily want to give too much credence to that, but they just don\u2019t seem to have much of a reach outside their opposition to environmental regulation. \u00a0Heck, unlike Heritage or Cato, I had never heard of them, and, for what it\u2019s worth, they have fraction of these other groups\u2019 twitter followers.<\/p>\n

So part of me thinks, \u201chey, send them a resume. \u00a0What\u2019s the worst that could happen?\u201d and part of me worries that I\u2019d be, figuratively, at least, selling my soul just for the sake of making a career change.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
