I have a few paragraphs drafted up and a few ideas I want to flesh out and am trying to force myself to wait \u2019til the weekend for this, but thought I\u2019d solicit your input:<\/p>\n

Currently the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts in the U.S. are very different programs: \u00a0Boy Scouts focuses on character development and life (especially outdoor) skills; Girl Scouts focuses on \u201cgirl empowerment\u201d and causes such as environmentalism \u2014 though from what I\u2019m told (from facebook friends who are Girl Scout leaders; my more immediate social world is Boy Scouts) Girl Scouts in practice is whatever the local leaders make it into.<\/p>\n

At the same time, Scouting in other countries is quite different still. \u00a0With respect to the \u201cGod\u201d component, in the UK, girls make a promise \u201cto be true to myself and develop my beliefs<\/a>\u201d rather than even following the U.S. Girl Scouts\u2019 approach of asterisking\u00a0\u201cto serve God\u201d with the notation that atheist girls may substitute \u201cmy conscience.\u201d \u00a0And in Germany (need to read more about this), there are multiple Boy Scout organizations, tied to Catholics, Protestants, and more generically secular, which come together in a nationwide organization. \u00a0I suspect that there are further differences as well but I need to read more.<\/p>\n
