once you add the ice rink, there’s not much space left. Certainly, it couldn’t play host to a Chriskindlmarkt, for instance. But if you look down the streets (we didn’t get out and walk around, or even do much driving) it does look like a real city — so long as you don’t leave the confines of the revitalized area.

So they’re trying.

Second item: Belle Isle. A former city park, now a state park (and it took a lot of wrangling to get the city to give up control, even though they couldn’t maintain it), with a long history. It houses the Dossin Great Lakes Museum, a small (but free!) museum emphasizing Detroit’s maritime heritage, the highlight of which is a recreation of a pilot house of a Great Lakes freighter, the William Clay Ford, in the 1980s (authentic down to the poster detailing what to do in case of nuclear attack), and a conservatory (fun fact: built in 1904, it’s the oldest continually running conservatory in the United States), as well as an aquarium — pictures here — of similar age. Here’s the story of the aquarium: with funds continually tight, it was shut down in 2005. Concerned citizens raised funds to reopen it in 2012, and staff it with volunteers, and at present, maybe 1/3 of the display cases contain actual fish, another 1/3 are just set up as displays (about invasive species, for instance), and the remainder are just “exhibit coming soon”). And, of course, compared to something like the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago, this is small, very small. But imagine Shedd Aquarium run entirely on fundraising, grants, and volunteer labor, with no admission charge.

Third: They’ve implemented a neighborhood revitalization program at buildingdetroit.org, where you can read all about the planned demolition program, the sale of “side lots” (that is, if the house adjacent to yours has been abandoned and demolished, you can buy the lot for $100), and neighborhoods (such as the currently-featured Marygrove neighborhood) which are targeted for revitalization.

Really, watch the video, and you can’t help but cheer for them.

Will Detroit succeed?

They’ve shed a lot of their financial liabilities, to be sure, in the bankruptcy. The problem is their other liabilities, not so easy to shed: the large numbers of poor, uneducated Detroiters, without job skills. The massive numbers of homes in need of demolition, and the non-viable neighborhoods, with as many vacant lots as homes, adding up to a low tax base and low density which means that they simply can’t pay for city services. The overall undesirability of Detroit for the middle class (much as the boosters trumpet the Whole Foods in the “midtown” — formerly New Center area, you’ll still be challenged to attract people who don’t want to be risk-takers and pioneers but just live an ordinary, safe life). And they’ve been perpetually announcing that renewal was just around the corner while bleeding population all the while.

Once again, a few impressions of Detroit after our visit there over Thanksgiving.
