Chicagoland readers will recognize Eric Zorn as one of the Tribune\u2019s columnists, whose writing has evolved over the years to become much more political and much more unapologetic on his stands, has declared \u201cmission accomplished<\/a>\u201c: \u00a0citing the Pew-reported rise of the \u201cnones\u201d, gay marriage in Illinois and Ireland, the rejection of the death penalty in Nebraska, and the decriminalization of pot in Illinois, he declares,<\/p>\n

taking the long view, this era-defining set of cultural debates \u2014 this \u201cwar\u201d \u2014 looks like a rout. The soul of the country has been won by a larger, more diverse group of people than those who tried to claim it. And, look around, the winners aren\u2019t about to let it go.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Who are the \u201closers\u201d? \u00a0A straw man people who believe<\/p>\n

that the government should censor obscenity, that women should not have all the rights and opportunities afforded to men, that teachers should lead public school students in prayer but offer no sex education, that the state should be able to ban contraception, that single mothers and cohabiters should be marginalized and that rock \u2018n\u2019 roll is the devil\u2019s music.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

What\u2019s really going on?<\/p>\n

The death penalty? \u00a0That\u2019s a red herring. \u00a0That\u2019s not a culture war issue. \u00a0But the two other issues he cites, gay marriage and pot-smoking, are connected, I suppose. \u00a0Not in the \u201cjustice for all\u201d way that people supporting \u201cmarriage equality\u201d imagine, but in the fact that supporters of liberalization in both those regards, can\u2019t or won\u2019t look beyond the tangible immediately-visible impacts (happy couples, claims of healing or generally well-being by pot smokers) \u2014 in the same way as the increasing secularization has much to do with a general not-looking-beyond.<\/p>\n
