{"id":2091,"date":"2015-05-30T22:06:54","date_gmt":"2015-05-31T04:06:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/admin.patheos.com\/blogs\/janetheactuary\/?p=2091"},"modified":"2015-05-31T17:11:45","modified_gmt":"2015-05-31T23:11:45","slug":"on-detroit-jeb-bush-is-a-little-bit-right","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/janetheactuary\/2015\/05\/on-detroit-jeb-bush-is-a-little-bit-right.html","title":{"rendered":"On Detroit, Jeb Bush is a little bit right. . ."},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p>Remember when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/janetheactuary\/2015\/05\/quick-detroit-post-for-the-day-the-magical-syrians.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">I griped<\/a> that some know-it-alls thought that the cure for what ails Detroit is to import 50,000 Syrians? \u00a0And, earlier, I had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/janetheactuary\/2015\/02\/ill-go-there-is-jeb-bush-racist.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">similarly complained<\/a> about Jeb Bush\u2019s similar solution, bringing in \u201cdynamic\u201d \u201chard-working\u201d immigrants, by means of, presumably, some requirement that immigrants under some special visa be required to live in Detroit.<\/p>\n<p>But in reading about Hamtramck and Highland Park for my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/janetheactuary\/2015\/05\/highland-park-or-you-think-detroit-is-bad.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">pair of posts <\/a>from earlier this week, I poked around at what I could find about this trio of cities. \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hamtramck,_Michigan\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Wikipedia<\/a> will tell you that<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"color: #252525;\">\u00a0As of the 2010 American Community Survey, 14.5% of Hamtramck\u2019s population is of\u00a0<a style=\"color: #0b0080;\" title=\"Poland\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Poland\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Polish<\/a>\u00a0origin;<sup id=\"cite_ref-7\" class=\"reference\"><a style=\"color: #0b0080;\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hamtramck,_Michigan#cite_note-7\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">[7]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0in 1970, it was 90% Polish.<sup id=\"cite_ref-8\" class=\"reference\"><a style=\"color: #0b0080;\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hamtramck,_Michigan#cite_note-8\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">[8]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #252525;\">Over the past thirty years, a large number of immigrants from the\u00a0<a style=\"color: #0b0080;\" title=\"Middle East\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Middle_East\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Middle East<\/a>\u00a0(especially\u00a0<a style=\"color: #0b0080;\" title=\"Yemen\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Yemen\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Yemen<\/a>),\u00a0<a style=\"color: #0b0080;\" title=\"South Asia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/South_Asia\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">South Asia<\/a>\u00a0(especially\u00a0<a style=\"color: #0b0080;\" title=\"Bangladesh\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bangladesh\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Bangladesh<\/a>), and\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect decorated-link\" style=\"color: #0b0080;\" title=\"Southeastern Europe\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Southeastern_Europe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Southeastern Europe<\/a>(especially\u00a0<a style=\"color: #0b0080;\" title=\"Bosnia and Herzegovina\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bosnia_and_Herzegovina\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Bosnia and Herzegovina<\/a>) have moved to the city. As of the 2010\u00a0<a style=\"color: #0b0080;\" title=\"American Community Survey\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/American_Community_Survey\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">American Community Survey<\/a>, the city\u2019s foreign born population stood at 41.1%,<sup id=\"cite_ref-9\" class=\"reference\"><a style=\"color: #0b0080;\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hamtramck,_Michigan#cite_note-9\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">[9]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0making it Michigan\u2019s most internationally diverse city.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The demographic differences between Hamtramck and its enclave-sister Highland Park are all the more stark in poking around at the data at statisticalatlas.com \u2014 here are the links for <a href=\"http:\/\/statisticalatlas.com\/place\/Michigan\/Hamtramck\/Overview\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Hamtramck<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/statisticalatlas.com\/place\/Michigan\/Highland-Park\/Overview\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Highland Park<\/a>, \u00a0and <a href=\"http:\/\/statisticalatlas.com\/place\/Michigan\/Detroit\/Overview\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Detroit<\/a>. \u00a0(This is a pretty cool site, with lots of data \u2014 it\u2019s a .com but I can\u2019t really figure where the business comes in \u2014 there are no ads, no subscriber requirements.)<\/p>\n<p>And here are some stats:<\/p>\n<p><strong>National origin \u2014 % of population that\u2019s US-born citizens:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Highland Park \u2014 99%<\/p>\n<p>Detroit \u2014 94.2%<\/p>\n<p>Hamtramck \u2014 49.1% (with 6.4% born-abroad citizens, 24.3% naturalized citizens, and 20.1% non-citizens).<\/p>\n<p>Which \u2014 considering that, while Hamtramck has lost population since its peak nearly to the same extent as Detroit and Highland Park, it lost its population earlier and has stablized, and is actually higher now than in 1980, would seem to prove Jeb\u2019s point that the way to avoid the bleeding of population experienced by both Highland Park and Detroit is to import immigrants.<\/p>\n<p>And, heck, the immigrants bring with them some favorable characteristics:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Percent of households with children under age 18 which consist of two married parents:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Hamtramck \u2014 72.7% (vs. 20.4% single moms and 7% single dads)<\/p>\n<p>Detroit \u2014 30% (vs. 59.3% single moms, and 10.7% single dads)<\/p>\n<p>Highland Park \u2014 16.8% (vs. 65.8% single moms and 17.4% single dads)<\/p>\n<p>And they are <em>slightly<\/em> more likely to be entrepreneurs:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Percent of workers who are self-employed or sole proprietors<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Hamtramck \u2014 7.9% (77.2% private sector, remainder non-profit or gov\u2019t)<\/p>\n<p>Highland Park \u2014 6.2% (65.2% private sector, rem. non-profit\/govt)<\/p>\n<p>Detroit \u2014 5.7% (vs. 69.7% private)<\/p>\n<p>But what\u2019s the big picture? \u00a0While Hamtramck isn\u2019t bleeding population, is isn\u2019t any more prosperous than Highland Park or Detroit. \u00a0All three cities have had emergency managers due to financial troubles, and here are the headline stats from my prior post:<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\">Hamtramck \u2013 poverty rate 43.5%; per capital money income $10,890<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\">Highland Park \u2013 poverty rate 51.1%; per capita money income $13,539<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\">Detroit \u2013 poverty rate \u00a039.3%; per capita money income \u00a0$14.870<\/p>\n<p>And, digging deeper, here are some more differences and similarities between the three cities:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Employment patterns \u2014 % of working-age (25 \u2013 64) not in the labor market<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Hamtramck \u2014 48.6%\u00a0(59.7% of women, 38.1% of men)<\/p>\n<p>Highland Park \u2014 55.1% (55.1% of women, 55% of men)<\/p>\n<p>Detroit \u2014 46.6% (47.5% of women, 45.6% of men)<\/p>\n<p>Now, in Hamtramck, a greater percentage of the non-working women are stay-at-home moms in two-parent families, and the labor force participant rate for men is indeed higher.<\/p>\n<p>Among families with children under 18, the percent of households with stay-at-home moms are:<\/p>\n<p>Hamtramck \u2014 50.5%<\/p>\n<p>Highland Park \u2014 51.4%<\/p>\n<p>Detroit \u2014 28%<\/p>\n<p>(Remember, there are a lot more two-parent families in Hamtramck.)<\/p>\n<p>A couple more stats:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Education \u2014 percent of those ages 25+ without a high school diploma:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Hamtramck \u2014 35.2%<\/p>\n<p>Highland Park \u2014 26.2%<\/p>\n<p>Detroit \u2014 22.4%<\/p>\n<p>(Yeah, I didn\u2019t expect the figure would be that low for Detroit, given the high drop-out rates you read about; it is ages 25 and up, so maybe there are a lot of GEDs in the mix.)<\/p>\n<p>and<\/p>\n<p><strong>Percent of households using food stamps<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Hamtramck \u2014 42.8%<\/p>\n<p>Highland Park \u2014 51.0%<\/p>\n<p>Detroit \u2014 40.3%<\/p>\n<p>So, look, I\u2019m a geek about data. \u00a0I could cite stats \u2019til the cows come home, though, without access to more sophisticated research I can\u2019t do much with it except to say:<\/p>\n<p>Yes, the fact that Hamtramck became a destination for immigrants prevented it from losing population in the way that Detroit and Highland Park have in the last several decades, which is certainly a good thing, just from the fact that a city needs a certain level of density to pay for infrastructure. \u00a0But to imagine that immigrants are going to bring wealth?
