I\u2019m currently managing the popcorn sale for the Cub Scout pack.\u00a0 Yes, I know it\u2019s overpriced.\u00a0 People fork over $10 for\u00a0a bag of caramel corn (not even a tin any longer) to support Cub Scouts, not because it\u2019s worth $10.\u00a0 And yes, we\u2019re in an upper-middle-class area so most of the families could just raise the fees to support the activities rather than needing the fundraiser \u2014 but not all the families around here do have ready cash, and, besides,\u00a0the profits are split 50\/50 with the Council (which would ordinarily mean the entire northwest suburbs of Chicago, but now most of the councils in the Chicago area, except for the wealthy-enough-to-go-it-alone Northshore, are combining, so I think the profits are shared Chicagoland-wide, so we\u2019re now subsidizing the City and south suburbs\/Gary area).<\/p>\n
But anyway, we\u2019ve been selling popcorn at the library and a local grocery store as well as asking the Scouts to sell individually, and each Scout who works a shift at a \u201csite sale\u201d gets credit towards the prizes (which, since I\u2019m running the sale, aren\u2019t the crappy prizes that the vendor provides, but are a sort of create-your-own-prize, with the alternate, \u201cpack gets extra commission,\u201d approach).\u00a0 <\/p>\n
My initial plan had been simple:\u00a0 total each scout\u2019s hours, total the sales at all the \u201csite sales,\u201d and prorate.\u00a0 It\u2019s simple and it\u2019s fair, because some sales were much more profitable than others.\u00a0 It also doesn\u2019t penalize a kid if they worked at a \u201cshift\u201d where there were other scouts, too, vs. being the only one (since this generally can\u2019t be helped \u2014 you sign up, and don\u2019t know whether anyone else\u2019ll sign up with you or not).\u00a0 But now one of the pack leaders has said that he assumed each scout would get credit for the specific sales they worked.\u00a0 And, being an actuary, I tend to overthink things.<\/p>\n
There are three choices:\u00a0 either my initial \u201cprorate over the total sale\u201d approach, or \u201cprorate on a per-day basis,\u201d\u00a0or, third, \u201cprorate on a per-shift basis.\u201d\u00a0 My own kid does best in the per-day or per-shift bases, because I carted him along to fill in holes so it was always just him, and he wouldn\u2019t need to split the profits with anyone \u2014 but I don\u2019t want the other parents to think I\u2019m choosing the method that gives him the highest prize.<\/p>\n
