I\u2019m in the middle of drafting a post in which I attempt to resolve, for me at least, the question of whether the circumstances behind Fiorina\u2019s termination from HP have something to say about her fitness for office. \u00a0Needs work, though, as I\u2019m working through some source material and putting together some thoughts and trying to think it through rather than tossing it off.<\/p>\n

But in the meantime: \u00a0I\u2019m still inclined to favor her over the other GOP candidates. \u00a0More details on this to come, as well, but:<\/p>\n

When\u00a0Walter Mondale selected Geraldine Ferraro as his running mate, and when John McCain\u00a0likewise selected\u00a0Sarah Palin, the presumption was that they would be able to garner votes from voters who were otherwise on the fence but excited to elect a woman. \u00a0And certainly Hillary Clinton is banking on support from voters who feel that they want the nation to \u00a0have its first female president* sooner rather than later, just as Obama surely got plenty of votes from people who were otherwise indifferent or undecided but wanted the feel-good of voting for a black person for president. \u00a0(*Note the use of the grammatically-correct \u201cfemale president\u201d rather than our annoying tendency to use \u201cwoman\u201d as an adjective.) \u00a0She has even, reportedly, touted being a woman as a qualification.<\/p>\n

(Remember: \u00a0my pet theory<\/a> is that the first female president will be conservative, not liberal, in a \u201cNixon in China\u201d sort of way.)<\/p>\n

So: \u00a0is Fiorina being given attention that she\u2019s otherwise undeserving of, by the fact that she\u2019s a woman? \u00a0Am I willing to overlook her deficiencies in a way that I wouldn\u2019t if she were a man?<\/p>\n

Maybe. \u00a0But to the extent that it\u2019s true, it\u2019s not a gushing, \u201cI\u2019d sure like to have a woman president,\u201d so much as an identification sort of thing. \u00a0Fiorina\u2019s a woman. \u00a0Hey, I\u2019m a woman, too. \u00a0We have something in common. \u00a0Sure, she was running a major corporation when she was younger than I am now, but so what? \u00a0And did you know that she and I both studied medieval history in college? \u00a0Isn\u2019t that cool?<\/p>\n

In the same way \u2014 did you know that Scott Walker is a Midwesterner? \u00a0Even if I knew nothing more about him, that identification would allow me to feel that we had some commonality.<\/p>\n

Now, did Obama\u2019s having come from Chicago, or Clinton from Park Ridge, trigger this identification? \u00a0No \u2013 because it\u2019s really more a matter of \u00a0making one more likely to give a candidate that you already think favorably of, the benefit of the doubt on other issues where you diverge or you don\u2019t know the person\u2019s opinion.<\/p>\n
