Why is Germany so willing to accept migrants? \u00a0Paul Mirengoff at Powerlineblog<\/a> says it\u2019s because of a short- and long-term population decline, citing projections that the population will decline from 81 to 67 million by 2060.<\/p>\n

He cites a Telegraph article<\/a>, but you can also read more on these projections at the German statistics agency site<\/a>. \u00a0What\u2019s particularly striking is this: \u00a0most population projections include alternate scenarios based on higher or lower birthrates. \u00a0Germany\u2019s alternate scenario doesn\u2019t assume an improved birth rate, but instead assumes a higher rate of immigration. \u00a0(In the full document, they do discuss alternate birth rate scenarios, but the headline projections don\u2019t consider this.) \u00a0So far as I can tell, the consensus is that the low birth rate is now too ingrained in the culture to be dislodged.<\/p>\n

And Germany is in fact, not just relative to other Eurozone countries but in absolute terms, an economic powerhouse: \u00a0its unemployment rate is 4.7%<\/a>, and its youth unemployment rate is 7.7%, the lowest in the EU.<\/p>\n

Interestingly, however, unlike the U.S., it\u2019s hard (or perhaps not possible) to find statistics on unemployment specifically among minorities, e.g., Turks.\u00a0 Here\u2019s an article that claims<\/a>\u00a0(unsourced and not very credibly) that 80% of Turks in Germany are on welfare. \u00a0Here\u2019s some data from 2009<\/a>, from a master\u2019s thesis, that says that at a time when the unemployment rate for Germans \u201cwithout a migration background\u201d (as they say) was 6.8%\/6.4% (men\/women), the rate for those with a Turkish background was 18.2%\/11.8%. \u00a0Conversely, the employment rate was 77.2%\/68.4% for non-immigrants, 48.5%\/37.5% for those with a Turkish background (1st & 2nd generation). \u00a0A large part of the difficulty is that (as with American-born children of Mexican immigrants) children enter 1st grade with poor German abilities, having not even attended preschool for German exposure there, which hinders them throughout their school careers.<\/p>\n

Which brings me to an article in Der Spiegel over the weekend<\/a>: \u00a0\u201cDieter Zetsche: Daimler-Boss l\u00e4sst in Fl\u00fcchtlingszentren nach Arbeitskr\u00e4ften suchen.\u201d<\/p>\n

Einer der gr\u00f6\u00dften Industriearbeitgeber Deutschlands will gezielt\u00a0Fl\u00fcchtlinge<\/a>\u00a0einstellen.\u00a0Daimler<\/a>-Chef\u00a0Dieter Zetsche<\/a>\u00a0k\u00fcndigte an, in den Fl\u00fcchtlingszentren Arbeitskr\u00e4fte zu suchen und f\u00fcr sein Unternehmen anzuwerben.<\/p>\n

\u201cIch k\u00f6nnte mir vorstellen, dass wir in den Aufnahmezentren die Fl\u00fcchtlinge \u00fcber M\u00f6glichkeiten und Voraussetzungen informieren, in Deutschland oder bei Daimler Arbeit zu finden\u201d, sagte Zetsche der \u201cBild am Sonntag\u201d (\u201cBamS\u201d). \u201cDie meisten Fl\u00fcchtlinge sind jung, gut ausgebildet und hoch motiviert. Genau solche Leute suchen wir doch.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Zetsche f\u00fcgte demnach hinzu: \u201cSie k\u00f6nnen uns \u2013 \u00e4hnlich wie vor Jahrzehnten die\u00a0Gastarbeiter<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 helfen, unseren Wohlstand zu erhalten beziehungsweise zu vermehren. Deutschland kann doch die freien Arbeitspl\u00e4tze gar nicht mehr allein mit Deutschen besetzen.\u201d<\/p>\n

Im August waren 2,8 Millionen Menschen in Deutschland ohne Job. Das war zugleich die niedrigste Arbeitslosigkeit in einem August seit 1991.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

One of the largest industrial employers in Germany wants to hire refugees. \u00a0Daimler CEO Dieter Zetsche annunced that he wants to look for workers in the refugee centers and recruit there for his firm.<\/p>\n

\u201cI can imagine that we will inform the refugees in the reception centers about opportunities and conditions to find work in Germany or at Daimler,\u201d Zetsche said to the Bild am Sonntag<\/em>. \u00a0\u201cMost of the refugees are young, well trained*, and highly motivated. \u00a0That\u2019s exactly the sort of people we\u2019re looking for.\u201d \u00a0[*well-trained = \u201cgut ausgebildet\u201d, educated or trained in a skilled trade]<\/p>\n

Zetsche added, \u201cThey could help us, as with the guestworkers from decades ago, help us to retain or increase our prosperity. \u00a0Germany can no longer fill our job openings\u00a0with Germans alone. \u201c<\/p>\n

In August 2.8 million people in Germany were unemployed. \u00a0For comparison, that is the \u00a0lowest unemployement level in August since 1991.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Now, it\u2019s curious that Zetsche is looking to these refugees, when the EU agreements permit workers from anywhere else within the EU to seek employment in Germany. \u00a0And perhaps this is just a feel-good statement anyway. \u00a0And it\u2019s by no means clear whether Zetsche and other employers are looking for shortcuts rather than addressing the situation of unemployed and unintegrated immigrants already in Germany.<\/p>\n

But in any case, to the extent that Germany absorbs these migrants on a large scale,\u00a0they\u2019re\u00a0taking a big risk, with an unknown outcome.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
