Yes, somehow my middle-school son\u2019s\u00a0friends were all into Monty Python and decided to dress as monks this year, giving me the perfect opportunity to use up some fabric (actually a $5 thrift-store tablecloth) that I had originally bought for another purpose, and, afterwards,to photograph him anonymously for the blog (don\u2019t worry, family and friends got to see his face).<\/p>\n

I\u2019m rather pleased with how this came out \u2014 I used my older son\u2019s 8th grade graduation gown to get a sense of the size of the robe itself and found a set of instructions for the hood<\/a>\u00a0(as of this writing, those instructions don\u2019t seem to exist online any longer, or at least temporarily are missing, but the link may work again later; in the meantime, here\u2019s the google cache<\/a>\u00a0but it\u2019s missing the image, which I\u2019ve recreated at the bottom of the post). \u00a0The hem at the bottom was pre-finished because I simply placed the finished edge of the tablecloth there. \u00a0And since the hood covered up the collar, I didn\u2019t fuss with this at all, but just left an opening large enough for his head to fit through.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m now undecided what to do with this \u2014 if I want it to last for another Halloween season, or maybe for, two years from now, my youngest son to use as a saint costume, I\u2019d have to finish up some of the edges which have begun to fray; as you can see, I didn\u2019t finish the edge on the hood at all, and what you can\u2019t see is that the sleeves are just cuffed up, not finished. \u00a0And I ought to finish all the seams so they don\u2019t fray either. \u00a0Or I could just pack it away and see what happens.<\/p>\n

So, there you have it. \u00a0Since I\u2019ve never figured out a way to make useful things with my sewing skills, and I\u2019m not the sort of person who can use the machine to make custom fashions, my opportunities to get into Sewing Mode are limited. \u00a0I guess once all my kids have moved past Halloween costumes I\u2019ll have to find some other way to keep the machine functional.<\/p>\n
