It\u2019s garbage.<\/p>\n

Really.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s the link to the study itself<\/a>, as linked to by Slate.com<\/a>, The Guardian<\/a>, and pretty much everyone else that wants confirmation that religious people are morally inferior.<\/p>\n

The study itself goes like this: \u00a0in individual sessions, researchers gave children, ages 5 \u2013 12, the opportunity to select 10 stickers out of a set of 30. \u00a0The kids were told that 10 were theirs to keep, but\u00a0they could choose to give away some to another child at their school who wasn\u2019t being given any; on average, atheist children chose to give away more of their stickers than either the Christian or Muslim children did. \u00a0So the news outlets are reporting this as a slam-dunk, proof that even as the world becomes more secular, we needn\u2019t worry about passing on morals and ethics to the next generation.<\/p>\n

But here\u2019s the catch: \u00a0they studied children all over the world, literally:<\/p>\n

Among these children,<\/p>\n

\u00a023.9% of households identified as Christian (n\u00a0= 280), 43% as Muslim (n\u00a0= 510), 27.6% as not religious (n\u00a0= 323), 2.5% as Jewish (n\u00a0= 29), 1.6% as Buddhist<\/a> (n\u00a0= 18), 0.4% as Hindu (n\u00a0= 5), 0.2% as agnostic (n\u00a0= 3), and 0.5% as other (n\u00a0= 6).<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

but the study does not give any kind of a breakdown by country, though presumably Jordan and Turkey would be almost exclusively comprised of Muslims; China nearly all \u201cnot religious\u201d with the 18 Buddhists, and Canada, the U.S. (Chicago) and South Africa with more diverse religious backgrounds, though predominantly Christian.<\/p>\n

And the study then comes up with the one conclusive table that\u2019s meant to prove their point:<\/p>\n

It astounds me this was published, in a credible scientific journal, and is being treated as a major research finding when there is no attention paid to the differences in culture<\/strong> between these three groups. \u00a0The bulk of the \u201cnot religious\u201d group were presumably Chinese children, whose culture is so different than that of the Turkish\/Jordanian Muslim children, or the American\/Canadian Christian children that it defies all reason to ignore this \u2014 not to mention the lack of adjustment for any other factor, such as a different age mix at the schools visited, different economic status of the children, the importance, or lack thereof, of stickers to children in different communities.<\/p>\n
