{"id":32,"date":"2015-02-18T16:13:00","date_gmt":"2015-02-18T22:13:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/admin.patheos.com\/blogs\/janetheactuary\/2015\/02\/final-resting-place.html"},"modified":"2015-02-24T21:11:44","modified_gmt":"2015-02-25T03:11:44","slug":"final-resting-place","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/janetheactuary\/2015\/02\/final-resting-place.html","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Final resting place&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p>Here\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stripes.com\/news\/europe\/germany\/final-resting-place-isn-t-always-final-in-germany-1.109232\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">an article <\/a>(somewhat older, but the story\u2019s still the same) on Germany burial practices. \u00a0Long story short: \u00a0cemeteries are owned by the town, and plots are leased for time periods of between 15 \u2013 30 years, depending on locality, then renewed if the family wishes, or reused otherwise. \u00a0The burial process isn\u2019t one of concrete vaults, but, rather, the natural decomposition process means that by the time the lease expires there generally aren\u2019t any remains left. \u00a0That\u2019s why, in a German cemetery, the individual graves are tended by family, who will plant and water flowers, and there aren\u2019t particularly many old grave stones, except for family graves where each new generation is buried together.<\/p>\n<p>And here\u2019s a pitch from my alma mater: <\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"tr_bq\"><p>Dear Jane: \u00a0\u00a0<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote class=\"tr_bq\"><p>Throughout our history, Michigan State University has touched many individuals and created a proud and vibrant extended family. We are currently exploring the idea of establishing an on-campus memorial to honor alumni and friends.\u00a0<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote class=\"tr_bq\"><p>We envision a peaceful garden, complete with strolling walkways and reflection benches. \u00a0A columbarium containing the cremated remains of interested Spartans would be the centerpiece. Space in the columbarium would be available for purchase in advance of the individual\u2019s passing. \u00a0<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote class=\"tr_bq\"><p>We look to you for guidance as this idea is discussed. Your answers to the following questions will help us determine the next steps.\u00a0<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div>Which is not unlike the proposal at my husband\u2019s Lutheran church.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Anyway, it makes me curious, which type of burial tradition is more common: \u00a0the notion that a grave is for the living, and ultimately a time-limited thing, or the notion that grave sites must be preserved in perpetuity, lest the body be desecrated. \u00a0I imagine that the American tradition must surely be fairly rare, and a \u201cluxury\u201d of our
