But there\u2019s one type of weapon that\u2019s widely permitted: \u00a0\u201csmall firearms,\u201d that is, gas pistols (of the type that fire tear gas) or flare guns, require only the \u201ckleinen Waffenschein\u201d or \u201csmall arms carry permit.\u201d<\/p>\n

And, according to the facebook page <\/a>of the Cologne police, and as reported by Der Spiegel<\/a>, they\u2019re receiving unusually many\u00a0new applications \u2014 and posted an instruction to the public that such a permit has to be applied for at the applicant\u2019s hometown, not in Cologne itself if they\u2019re not resident there, and they\u2019re notifying the public to reduce the workload of\u00a0city officials.<\/p>\n
