I\u2019ve started to poke around the Mother Jones site, for kicks, and landed on an old article, \u201cThe Spam Factory\u2019s Dirty Secret<\/a>.\u201d \u00a0I\u2019m not sure if it\u2019s their usual practice to \u201crecycle\u201d older articles (this dates from 2011), but here it is, an extended description of Hormel\u2019s actions: \u00a0\u201cFirst, Hormel gutted the union. Then it sped up the line. And when the pig-brain machine made workers sick, they got canned.\u201d<\/p>\n

Now, \u201cgetting canned\u201d isn\u2019t really the right statement. <\/p>\n

Hormel did indeed, over the course of the 90s and 2000s, speed up the line and cut pay, dramatically. \u00a0They also shifted to a 75% immigrant workforce, and, the article implies, nearly all those immigrants are illegal, so all it takes to \u201ccan\u201d someone is to tell them, \u201cyou know, your name and Social Security number match that of someone else.\u201d <\/p>\n

What would happen if our laws against working without authorization were actually enforced? \u00a0Clearly, it was the availability of an immigrant workforce that enabled Hormel to cut wages and speed up the line. \u00a0In order to fill the \u201cjobs Americans won\u2019t do,\u201d the company would be required to pay its workers a fair wage and create more human working conditions. <\/p>\n

Yet the author empathizes with the illegal-immigrant workers, and praises the resolve of one man who, instead of slinking away when he\u2019s told that \u201d law enforcement was investigating, that they had already found records of [his] \u00a0information being used in five other states, . . . insisted he didn\u2019t know anything about that, that those people must have somehow stolen his information.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
