(I typed up the following yesterday, then let it sit to think about it. \u00a0I\u2019m not crazy about it \u2014 it really needs a lot of refinement \u2014 but my core thought is still this: \u00a0people who are quite convinced that they can control the fate of their children and grandchildren, and do the right things to ensure they get the plum jobs that benefit from cheap labor rather than being imperiled by it, are the ones supporting open immigration. \u00a0In any event, I just thought I\u2019d put this out there for comment.)<\/i><\/p>\n
Yesterday I wrote about the AAP\u2019s statement that pediatricians are to tell their patients\u2019 parents that it\u2019s necessary for their children\u2019s development to read to them from infancy. \u00a0And the day before (and multiple times before that) I expressed my frustration at the Democrats\u2019 seeming support for open immigration. <\/p>\n
My mind wanders as I move through the day\u2019s routine. \u00a0And my first thought is:<\/p>\n
It\u2019s the Democrats primarily who push the narrative that a child doesn\u2019t receive the right \u201cinputs\u201d during the first years of life (e.g., via universal \u201chigh-quality\u201d preschool and, ideally, universal state-funded childcare from infancy on, where professionals can ensure your child is reared properly), then they\u2019re permanently doomed. \u00a0They become Epsilons, not by means of intentional intellectual stunting while developing in an artificial womb, but due to their deficiencies in infancy through early childhood. <\/p>\n
At the same time, they\u2019re more than happy to bring into the U.S. untold numbers of Epsilons. <\/p>\n
By their own reckoning, they\u2019re dooming the country, with legions of people who are harmed for life by their deficient upbringing.<\/p>\n
But my second thought is:<\/p>\n
in Brave New World, those who designed the system would have been able to create an all-Alpha society, but they wanted Epsilons.<\/p>\n
And that\u2019s the story here, too: \u00a0open-immigrationists want Epsilons, cheap labor. \u00a0But the studies from the AAP and so on are reassuring to them, telling them that, if they follow the endless rules about pregnancy dos and don\u2019ts and parenting rules \u2014 read to your kid, talk to them endlessly, get them into the right schools, they can be confident that they won\u2019t have an Epsilon kid. \u00a0By following these rules, they can create a caste-like system, but without the legal or social restrictions.<\/p>\n
