So I\u2019m as impressed by Dave Brat\u2019s win as anyone else, and I\u2019m not pleased by CNN\u2019s glib \u201ctea party\u201d identification<\/a>, as I haven\u2019t seen anything indicating that Brat wrapped himself in the Tea Party mantle, so much as that he emphasized that he was more trustworthy and Cantor was out-of-touch with his constituents (which Cantor compounded by being, well, out-of-touch with his consitituents). <\/p>\n

The CNN article also downplays the significance of the win, noting that Lindsey Graham, an amnesty champion, easily won his primary. \u00a0But I looked at the numbers themselves, from the Washington Post<\/a>: \u00a0Cantor had one challenger, a highly credible professor, but Graham, who took 57% of the vote, had six challengers \u2014 it\u2019s no surprise that they\u2019d split the vote and no one candidate would be able to gain the necessary traction. \u00a0(What about Boehner? \u00a0He cruised to a primary victory handily over two opponents<\/a> \u2014 but it seems to me that I had earlier read that there were four opponents, so either I\u2019m misremembering, or two dropped out.)<\/p>\n

Is the Tea Party dead? \u00a0Alive? \u00a0\u201cWhat difference, at this point, does it make?\u201d \u00a0The Tea Party is not a monolitic entity; in a way, it represents an idea: \u00a0\u201cTaxed Enough Already,\u201d yes, but also anger that the Establishment GOP is more about the top leadership preserving their own status and power than a commitment to the American people. \u00a0The bigger issue is this: \u00a0we see statistics that, once a candidate has won election to the Senate or House, they\u2019re practically guaranteed reelection as many times as they wish. \u00a0And the power of incumbency is so strong that they lose interest in what their constituents think. \u00a0For the sake of our democracy, I\u2019ll cheer on any upstart challenger who upsets an incumbent. <\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
