This is a difficult topic.<\/p>\n
This case doesn\u2019t fit into our neat categories.<\/p>\n
Hate crime? Not in the same way as the man who shot people at the Sikh temple, then killed himself.<\/p>\n
Though I haven\u2019t seen much on the timeline, the news articles report that he \u201cturned himself in.\u201d Maybe that\u2019s police-speak for \u201cwe had him surrounded,\u201d but it doesn\u2019t sound like it. Were there witnesses that pinned this on him, or some incontrovertible evidence, and they had his own condo surrounded?<\/p>\n
I suppose this is what\u2019s called a \u201ccrime of passion\u201d ultimately. He was reportedly always angry, and now he\u2019s not only killed three innocent people, but has thrown away his own life \u2014 and for what? (In the inner city, when you read about people shooting over arguments over high-end sneakers, the shooter is often not known \u2014 a drive-by shooting \u2014 or at least believes he\u2019ll get away with it.)<\/p>\n
Perhaps their being \u201cforeign\u201d to him exacerbated his anger, but in any case we have a man who, in the abstract, believed in tolerance, according to his wife, but at the same time, went through life angry \u2014 and the parking spot issue seemed to be an obsession with people not parking in visitor spots when they weren\u2019t actually visitors but lived in the complex, even though it didn\u2019t seem to affect him personally. How can a person be so angry that they kill over it, and that, even when they destroy themselves in the process? And yet how often does it happen, and just doesn\u2019t make the national news because there\u2019s no \u201cracial\u201d angle about it? That is, ultimately, what troubles me about this report.<\/p>\n

But here again we have on display the destructiveness of anger \u2014 even so-called \u201crighteous anger.\u201d \u00a0It\u2019s not quite at the level of mental illness \u2014 I doubt this guy will succeed in a \u201cmentally ill\u201d claim unless he was hearing voices or the like. \u00a0The \u201canti-theist\u201d bit was one way that this killer had an outlet for his anger, a seemingly-harmless one of posting things online. \u00a0His obsession with residents parking in visitor spots (which seems not to be motivated by he himself having visitors who couldn\u2019t park there) was another outlet. \u00a0Had he been black, that anger might have had an outlet in complaints about racism. \u00a0Is that low-level anger that so many people carry with them, or the elevated level of others, connected, did it cause this? \u00a0Or is this wholly unrelated?<\/p>\n
And is it possible for an \u201calways angry\u201d person to will themselves to be, well, less angry?<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
