From the Daily Mail (of course): \u00a0\u201c\u2018Several dead\u2019 and 10 injured in shooting rampage inside a Munich shopping centre as police hunt gunman.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n

And: \u00a0reports of a second shooting at Marienplatz. \u00a0(Sky News<\/a>; I could only find a twitter link.)<\/p>\n

According to the Express<\/a>, the second shooting was actually at Karlsplatz, which isn\u2019t the \u201cmain square\u201d but at the other end of the pedestrianized shopping street. \u00a0The whole mass transit system has also been shut down.<\/p>\n

Shooter(s) still at large.<\/p>\n

Context: \u00a0the Olympia Shopping Center is not a tourist destination, but just a shopping mall for locals. \u00a0Marienplatz is, of course, right at the very heart of the city, but Karlzplatz is again more a destination for locals, especially at this time of day, because it\u2019s\u00a0early evening locally right now.<\/p>\n

And, for regular readers, Marienplatz is exactly where I was a week ago<\/a>, though we left before dinner.<\/p>\n

Oh, and, I just remembered: \u00a0my niece is a police officer trainee there!<\/p>\n

UPDATE:<\/p>\n

According to Deutsche Welle<\/a>, there were 9 killed, and 21 injured, of which 3 seriously, but the killer was found dead, having committed suicide, near the OEZ. \u00a0He was a local, of Iranian origin, 18 years old. \u00a0The shooting reports at Karlsplatz and Marienplatz were false alarms.<\/p>\n

Saturday morning updates:<\/p>\n

Just checking the latest reports on twitter. \u00a0According to The Local.de<\/a>, the dead consist of three Turkish nationals, one Greek,and three Kosavars. \u00a0(Here\u2019s another source<\/a> on the Kosavars.) A further article<\/a> says that Munich police believe that he was inspired by Brevik (which makes sense; on twitter there were comments that yesterday was the 5th anniversary of that attack), not ISIS.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is absolutely no link to the Islamic State,\u201d Munich police chief Hubertus Andrae said.<\/p>\n

He said the assault was a \u201cclassic act by a deranged person\u201d and described an individual \u201cobsessed\u201d with mass shootings.<\/p>\n

He said German investigators saw an \u201cobvious link\u201d between Friday\u2019s killings and Breivik\u2019s massacre of 77 people in a bomb attack in Oslo and a shooting rampage on the nearby island of Utoya exactly five years earlier.<\/p>\n

Most of the victims in Friday\u2019s attack were foreigners.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

According to the Mirror<\/a> (yes, these are all links from twitter and Drudge, which is just a convenient way of finding reports), the killer was an 18 year old son of a taxi driver with dual German and Iranian citizenship. \u00a0He\u2019s reported to have said, \u201cbecause of you I was bullied for 7 years.\u201d<\/p>\n

Which suggests that the motivation was not Brevik\u2019s, strictly speaking, or, rather, not as simple as a neo-Nazi hatred of foreigners as racially impure \u2014 but rather, perhaps, an anger that he himself was lumped in with the horde of never-ending, non-assimilating, uneducated foreigners.<\/p>\n

The link also mentions someone on Dachauerstrasse who knew the killer \u2014 just checked the map and that\u2019s quite close to the OEZ. \u00a0The killer also said, \u201cI grew up here in the Harz 4 area\u201d \u2014 I don\u2019t know enough about the local area to know whether the \u201chere\u201d was specifically this neighborhood, but \u201cHarz 4 area\u201d refers to unemployment\/welfare benefits, so \u201cHarz 4\u201d means \u201cpoor neighborhood.\u201d\u00a0 Was, then, the OEZ was his target for no special reason other than that was his neighborhood, and a place with a high concentration of foreigners? \u00a0Whether he targeted foreigners in his shooting, or whether the McDonald\u2019s (or other locations with victims \u2014 that detail\u2019s not clear to me yet) was simply, in general, frequented by immigrants, I haven\u2019t seen reported.<\/p>\n

So:<\/p>\n

Knowing this, knowing that this was, from what we know now, not an ISIS attack: \u00a0is that better? \u00a0Is that worse? \u00a0Does that enable you to shrug it off and say, \u201coh, another mass killing by an angry teen,\u201d or even, \u201ceh, 9 dead isn\u2019t so much\u201d?<\/p>\n

Saturday evening: \u00a0The Daily Mail<\/a> now filled in more details about the killer. \u00a0He lived two miles from the shooting site, was a drop-out from his vocational high school, did little other than play video games, threatened to kill others well before the attack, and had complained about \u201cbullying by \u2018Turkish and Arabic\u2019 schoolmates\u201d in the past. \u00a0So, more like the Sandy Hook killer, perhaps, except that he seemingly illegally purchased a pistol of the sort generally prohibited for ordinary citizens, rather than using guns legally owned by the family.<\/p>\n

the country was still home to the fourth-highest number of legal guns per capita in 2013, falling behind just the United States, Switzerland and Finland.
\nAbout 2 million people own more than 5.5 million legal guns in Germany for a population of more than 80 million.<\/p>\n

On top of that, police unions have estimated that there are up to 20 million more illegally-owned guns in Germany \u2013 this would mean roughly 30 guns for every group of 100 people.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
