So which of these is a \u201creal\u201d Muslim woman?<\/p>\n
Both of them are.<\/p>\n
Which of them had front-page coverage?<\/p>\n
The one who covered her hair.<\/p>\n
To be clear, if a woman sincerely believes that God has called her to cover her hair, she should have every right to do so, and should be permitted full participation in public life without harassment, and that\u2019s true for Muslim women, or Jewish women, or Mennonite women, or whatever other religious group has such a practice.<\/p>\n
But we as outsiders should no more treat hair-covering Muslim women as the only sort of \u201cauthentic\u201d Muslim women than we would treat hair-covering Jewish women as the only authentic Jewish women, which, the last I checked, we don\u2019t.<\/p>\n
Sure, it\u2019s convenient, for a news outlet to pluck an image of women with covered hair to represent Muslim women. \u00a0But in its own way, it\u2019s harmful, too, isn\u2019t it, since it locks us all, Muslim and non-Muslim, into seeing the normative Muslim woman as having covered hair?<\/p>\n
